This is for my non computer saavy bass player..

He is looking to upgrade his rig to something more powerful. Right now he plays a Crate BX100 and while he (and I) like the tone he gets out of it, we have played a couple of places now that didnt mike his bass and he would like something he doesnt have to peg all the time.

If you know of something that is in the same price range, say about $500 ish please tell me!

The tone he is looking for is lots o bass, lots of low-mids the tinniest bit of mids and no highs. More like a Force of Nature tone than a slap tone.

Also he is really interested in the sub harmonizer in both of these amps, so any comments on that would be appreciated.

And finally does the Behringer come with a footswitch to turn the subharmonizer on? Is the Ashdowns sub footswitchable?

Thank you

Ashdown MAG 300H + Avatar cab. I'd suggest the 2x12 personally instead of the 1x15 for a standalone cab.

I don't dig Ashdown cabs. If he can't try one out, I'm gonna suggest not to get a combo.

The heads are 90% the same, the Behringer was basically copied from the Ashdown. The Behringer does have footswitchable sub-octave, while the Ashdown does not. I've never needed to turn it off and on mid-song though so this may not be a big deal.

I distrust Behringer. I have had experiences with a few of their products, and the results have been mostly negative. I've had no problems with my MAG 300, or for that matter my MAG cab (except that it doesn't cut through without judicious EQing).

Thanks for all the replies, they have been very helpful!!

The Behringer cabs suck. I'm sorry, they're just the worst sounding pieces of {censored} i've ever heard. They're also incredibly easy to make fart out.

Nothing to be sorry about, im happy to hear any opinion good or bad. Since my bassist plays in the rumble/ holy-crap-is-that-an-earthquake range i really want to hear if the cabs can handle low low frequencies, expecially with the subharmonizer funcion. Odd you think that Behringer would design their cabs to handle the real lows since the amp they have has the sub fature.

Why do you recommend the 2-12? Does it produce the low lows well? Would it hold up with the subharmonizer all the time?

Also i screwed up. The Ashdown 300h is rated at 307 watts and the Avatar cab is rated at 300. Guess i should change it to the Kappa Pro?

Thanks again!

I recommend a 2x12 instead of a 1x15 because, in the Avatar models, there probably won't be much difference in the low end.

BTW, if amps and cabs are rated about the same for wattage its probably OK. I run my Ashdown into an Avatar 2x10 all the time. Daily! Its only a problem when you turn up the amp enough to clip, at which point it doesn't matter if your cab is rated for 300 or 3 million watts, it'll die.

Behringer's cabs are, I believe, copped from Hartke cabs. I used to be a big Hartke hater until I actually tried one out. NOT bass-heavy at all, but clean and punchy. That doesn't sound like the earthquake-causation frequencies your bassist wants.

Realize that the Ashdown/Behringer subharmonizer is actually rather subtle. But the DEEP switch! Use that in combination with the subharmonizer and turn the lows and low mids up and even a small cab will sound HUGE.
