Members bassman1956 Posted September 7, 2005 Members Posted September 7, 2005 Just want to know... On my MK5, I get a lot of fret noise with them, bronze rounds, and have a set of GHS brite flats laying around... What's the trade-offs if I use something other than bronze strings?
Members 4string Posted September 7, 2005 Members Posted September 7, 2005 I have been toying with the idea of putting flatwounds or groundwounds on mine to give more of an upright sound to it. Not sure if it will. The other thing I have done is gone to a rubber pick to give me a louder attack without losing the finger sound.
Members Hamer-Bass-Head Posted September 7, 2005 Members Posted September 7, 2005 flats sound great on a decent ABG....
Members mrcrow Posted September 7, 2005 Members Posted September 7, 2005 do they resist corrosion better than steel...ie finger sweat etc... and if there is no pup...you dont need magnetic material... just a guess;)
Members bassman1956 Posted September 7, 2005 Author Members Posted September 7, 2005 Actually, fingermarks are more prominent, like an acid-mark.
Members Thrash Jazz Posted September 7, 2005 Members Posted September 7, 2005 I reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaalllllllllllly recommend trying tapewounds on an ABG. I'll never touch a set of bronzes again. They sound and feel much better - almost like a classical guitar.

I thought that phosphorus bronze strings are generally used for ABG's that have a piezo pickup, but I'm not certain.

Yeah, I have a slab piezo under the bridge. My bad. Didn't think to add that... Does it matter?
Members Sixgun77 Posted September 8, 2005 Members Posted September 8, 2005 Try stainless flats, they're pretty resistant to skin oils and corrosion. Plus, you get a really nice tone(if you like flats).

They aren't really cheaper. They aren't cleaner. They have a bit stronger mids. But really, just, why?
Members Sixgun77 Posted September 8, 2005 Members Posted September 8, 2005 IIRC bronze is squishier than steel. Like nickel, it should induce less wear on your frets and fingerboard. That is the only real reason I can think of aside from the difference in tone.
Members Rhythmalism Posted September 8, 2005 Members Posted September 8, 2005 The phos/bronze strings also give a little more output and a pleasing tone for acoustic applications.

I'd try other brands, but the Fenders are the only ones I can seem to find around here. Doesn't matter - I dig the way they sound. Acoustically, tapes are A LOT louder than regular flats, but they have a similar feel.
