What do Guitarists say about us?

A common view is that bassists are just disgruntled guitarists who couldn't play guitar well enough, so they went to an "easier" instrument. We're inferior to guitarists and even disgruntled, since we don't get to have the spotlight as much. Bassists are sometimes seen as the red headed stepchilds of bands, IMO.

But I always have loved this analogy:

Bassists are the Marines. Tough, dependable, first into a hard situation, happy to do the heavy lifting. A lot of lay people think they are Army, but they are proud not to be.

Drummers are the Navy. Useful and necessary to get you anywhere. Quite specialized. Quirky, prefers to hang with his own sort.

Guitarists are the Army. Out front getting the headlines, but also most likely to be in enemy fire. Endlessly complaining. Blames the equipment. Certain other divisions are unnecessary. Likes to take charge on the ground but just as likely to get tied up running a supply route. Think they could be Marines but secretly know they can't.

Keyboardists are the Air Force. Running a very technical and complex operation, requiring long and difficult training, always getting the most expensive gear. Best if not visible. Trying to replace the rest of the band by pressing a few buttons. Will eventually be replaced with someone remotely pressing a few buttons.

Singers are local cops. Most of the time you cringe when you see them. They're usually self-important and want everything to be about them. A good one, however, is a great asset to the area.

Would it kill you to say something positive about guitarists? You have something positive to say about other musicians in the rest of the analogy

So who's the Coast Guard? No love for the knee-deep navy??

The Coast Guard would be the sound guy then I guess. But honestly, who gives a crap what the guitarist thinks? If it weren't for the rhythm section they'd be speeding up and slowing down all the while wondering what contorted face to make while they play a simple power chord.

I did not write it!. I am a guitarist - had I written it, I would have included something more positive about it.

But I know where you're coming from.

cop out. If you steal someone else's joke, you should at least modify the parts you don't agree with.
