But a lot of people (me included) use them in their signal chain for warm, natural sounding overdrive (or just a thicker, fatter tone). Don't expect it to sound like an all-tube Ampeg, but it still sounds good. Preamps like the Tech21 SansAmp are very common when used with a power amp which drives cabinets. Sometimes even works out cheaper. Personally, I prefer an intergrated solution that was designed to be a stand-alone unit. But that's just me. Members niomosy
For $2k for everything, you're probably looking at used gear. The Genz Benz is a great head. For cabs, a Schroeder small box (2x10, 2x12 or 1x10 & 1x12 are the options...) would be a great way to go. It's the same price and size for which ever speaker option you chose. Used isn't likely so new here. $649 is the price. Other options might be an Aguilar of some kind. I like their GS-112's and GS-212's but they make others as well. The SansAmp/PowerAmp combo is pretty popular as well. I haven't tried this kind of setup. As for basses, a Music Man of some kind is a great suggestion, though you may be wanting more of a Fender Jazz of some kind, given your preference for them already. Also consider G&L's as they're still a pretty good used value.
Members bassarama
I just looked at the Avatar speaker site, and now I really have to try these cabs. They're highly recommended and I have to say, the price is REALLY reasonable. I was told this, ofcourse, but to see it on the site is hard to believe. The other stuff you can get from the site looks appealing too.

I did play thru a Schroeder just this past Sat. and was REALLY impressed. I bet that with a Genz Benz head would haul almighty ass. ...besides one Schroeder cab will do the job of 2 Avatars. Members bassarama
So if I were to get a GENZ BENZ 600 and 1 Schroeder cab, which cab should I get? Keep in mind I'll be playing a Fender Jazz or something similar in all styles: rock, jazz, funk, blues, even Irish, country and bluegrass. I'll also be playing everything from small bars to big country clubs to outside gigs. It looks like 1 Schreder and the Genz Benz will run me almost the whole $2000. Thanks, bassarama
