Some of those bass lines were tough and not suited for beginners. That Motown stuff can be deceptively difficult. You might need to direct him to the specific song you are thinking of.

Well, am not sure how big a something you want to take on...

Another Deep Purple tune, Space Truckin', has a good bass line. Fast, yes, but fairly straight-forward walking down-hill. You can slow it way, way down, and it still has a nice bass groove to it.

You can get the tab/music at the Power Tab Archive . For Space Truckin', either use the browse/search functions in the left column, or go here. Also, you will need to download their reader/editor here.

"Maybe I'm A Leo" is another off the Machine Head album that's great, but there's no tab for it.

DP is great for bass lines!

do you have kids? how old? how old are you?

I always use the tv for inspiration, over the years I've played:

The Munsters's theme

The sailors' pipe dance (Popeye's xylophone intro)

The Looney Tunes theme

The Pink Panther

I dream of Jeannie

F-Troop

Barney Miller

a dozen or so Barney songs

Sesame Street

and don't overlook gameshows

there's a vast wasteland of stupid songs to tap into...

This thread got me looking thru powertab.net for something interesting to try and I found one that is really done well and will have you working like a dog all over the fretboard. You should download...

Sure it's wetern movie theme oriented but scroll down and play this guy's "E" section "Western Variations". What an awesome tab!. The whole medley of tunes is good but section E in terrific. I sit in awe of anyone who has the speed, accuracy and dexterity to pull that part off.

"Mony Mony" - Billy Idol

"Dancing in the Streets" - (the original)

"Godzilla" - Blue Oyster Cult

"Iron Man" - Black Sabbath

and if you're up for a little bit of a challenge (for a beginner leve), then try "Brown Eyed Girl" - Van Morrison. It is more complicated than root or root 5, but it repeats throughout with minor differences, and the solo is just the repeating bass line.

Good luck.
