Members Benjamin
I need this Trace Elliot head identified, and I also need to know whether or not it is potentially a good upgrade to my AH300-SMC (which I love lots). Would you say that a true V4 would be worth finding over one of the V-Type hybrids, if that is what this is? Sorry to be a pain in the ass, but this website sucks and I can't link you directly to the advertisement Australian Trading Post You'll need to type in 'Trace Elliot' into the search and then it will appear as a 'V-Type' in the list. I believe it is a V-Type 300H, in which case I may just skip it. Thanx!

Members gspointer
I can't tell what it is, it looks just like my v-6 except the knobs are not chrome and the badge says trace elliot and not v-6. Call em up. BTW what is the conversion rate, I see tey are asking 1300 for it. If you use a P.A. the tube output should not be a big deal. A hybrid should be a lot cheaper though. Members Benjamin
I spoke to the dealer and he could only quote me a model number 5001, which I believe is the preamp model number. He says it is all valve, but I just can't tell. Pictures of the 300H look identical to that, and from memory the V4, V6 and V8 were all a darker finish with the V badge on the front. I think he is pulling my leg that it is all valve. I could buy it, and then hold him to the fact that it isn't all valve...
Members sunburstbasser
The all-tube models say V4/6/8 on the front in big letters, either where it says V-type or on the Trace Elliot logo of that amp. Either way, this amp doesn't proclaim itself to be an all tuber, and I wouldn't believe it was. The V-Type hybrids still kick the ass of most other amps, but I think that V4s go for around $800 US tops, so thats, what, not more than about $1100-1200 AUS? Members Benjamin
Hehe I wish a V4 were only around $1200. I was quoted around $1800 for a V4 when I looked into it a few months ago. I would pay that, mind you, especially if it were all it is cracked up to be. The question is, how does a V4 stack up against something like the AH300-7/SMC series in terms of volume? I don't push my AH300 that hard all the time, but she occasionally gets run to 3/4 max. Members Waabs
I'm not sure if they still do but The Bassplayer in Sydney had a Quattra Valve for ages. I bet they'd let it go for a steal if you pushed them.
Members slapthefunkyfour
it looks cool. I have a ah300, and I love it. I would like to have some more power but it sounds awesome.
Members Benjamin
Power is not a huge problem for me for now. The sound is approximately what I want, but that's only because I don't know what a V4/V6/V8 sounds like. Does anyone have clips that may just clear this up? Members Waabs
Also the Traynor YBA 200s retail has dropped to $1695. After a bit of bargaining that would be a real bargain.
Members Waabs
If you really want that head in the Trading Post ask him to send you more pics. Get a picture of the small writing under where it says Trace Elliot on the face plate and of the back so you can see the valves (or not see them). Members Benjamin
The Traynor sounds attractive, but I don't really want to move away from Trace that far. As yet nobody has told me whether there is a family sound similarity between the solid state and valve Trace amps. Of all the valve bass amps I have seen, the Trace models are most appealing. I might just ask him for photos. Good idea.
Members MageZ
IIRC Beam had some clips of his V-type...
Members Waabs
Bassyeti's latest band recordings were using his V8. If you do a search you should find them. It needs to be the latest ones because the older ones were with his Eden. As far as I remember Basstasters has clips of the Vtype preamp as well. Members sunburstbasser
The solid-state Trace sound is like a more refined and improved SWR tone, or so I've heard. The all-tube gives warmth of, say, an SVT while having a much quicker sound than most tube amps.
Members Benjamin
I love my solid-state Trace sound, in one direction. For that kind of sound I could only ask for more mids, but I am getting there with my EQ settings. On the other hand, I want to be able to go beef when I need to. The question still remains: is a Trace V4 going to keep up with a 300W solid-state Trace in terms of volume. *goes searching for clips*
Members Waabs
Is a Trace V4 going to keep up with a 300W solid-state Trace in terms of volume? I would say so. I run my V8 at half power (just using 4 of the KT88s) which should be basically be the same as running a V4. It's still really really loud at half power. The only way you could really tell would be to A/B it with your 300W Trace but from past experience with those Trace heads and various other bass amps I think the V4 would be louder. And as has been said, if it's an all tube V-type it will have two distinguishing marks. 1) The tag on the front will say V-4/6/8. On the hybrid, the metal tag in the green cloth field just says "Trace Elliot" 2) If it's the hybrid, it will only say "All Valve Bass Preamplifier" on the front under the V-Type logo. Full tube heads won't just claim they have a full valve preamp This is my hybrid
Members Benjamin
It looks like this one is a hybrid. In that case I would need to offload my amp before going for this one. I am not prepared to do that right now, so I am better off waiting until I can afford a full valve amp to supplement the rig. This Trace can be my backup/standby. Members NeonVomit
The only thing as good as Trace reissuing all-tube amps would be Ashdown making them. I mean, they already make all tube guitar amps...
