The problem is that your assuming this is a music forum, whereas it is a life forum with a healthy dose of music. Why is there so little talk of Down To The Bone? Or Stratovarius? Or Emerson Lake and Palmer? Or Chick Corea? Do you hate music? Of course not! Just can't talk about it all the time.

I think we should discuss HELP, the oft rumoured supergroup between the members of ELP and Hendrix. Mahavishnu > Chick

Mahavishnu > Chick The oft-rumored group that would have started after his stint with Miles Davis, who asked Hendrix to play on Bitches Brew a week before Jimi died. Chick Corea has one thing Mahavishnu doesn't have. John Pattitucci.

Members The Insomniac Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 Allen Woody kicks butt. One of the only reasons I can think of to buy a short scale bass.
Members PrestiaRules Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 Originally posted by The Insomniac Allen Woody kicks butt. One of the only reasons I can think of to buy a short scale bass. he certainly did! I really like the Government Mule stuff before he died. The DVD that Mike Gordon made about them recording that album with all those famous bassplayers was okay but Mike himself (and the whole DVD IMHO) came off as some sort of first year film school/I wrote my first poem sort of deal Gordon is a killer bassist but I would not recommend he retires to become a film maker What was up with Larry Graham??
Members Newget Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 I agree with the poster above. As a Gordon phan and Gov. Mule fan and a general fan of all the players involved, Gordon did a terrible job with this DVD. There was too much pretentious "art" IMO. There were some great moments and exciting clips, but as a bassist and fan of this style of music and players involved, I can't watch it too often.

Members readybeans Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 i was a somewhat a fan of Mike Gordon's till i saw Rising Low. What a dink! Right after that he gets caught "romancing" a minor and plays it all off with some of the lamest varlance i've ever heard. NO THANK YOU! Now McLaughlin, on the other hand......

That's a total shot to the balls, ""romancing" a minor " is such a bull{censored} statement and unfair discrimination. There was nothing of the sort, if there was criminal charges and a trial I would have a different opinion.
Members catphish Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 Originally posted by Newget There was nothing of the sort, if there was criminal charges and a trial I would have a different opinion. +1 September 19, 2003 - The Associated Press By The Associated Press "Judge Francis Ricigliano threw out the charges against Gordon after prosecutors made a motion to dismiss the case, said Rick Hinshaw, a spokesman for Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon. Hinshaw said the girl's parents also wanted the charges to be dropped. After Gordon's arrest, the band issued a joint statement from Gordon and the girl's family calling the incident "an unfortunate misunderstanding." "
Members PhishGordo Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 Rising Low is a great film, gordon does a great job."well, the bass players are the members of the band with the biggest, uh.. penises."-les claypool.

I liked parts with the other bass players but the walking around soliloqy and that just wasn't for me Did you like Bittersweet Motel? I hear so many mixed reviews about it from Phish fans....first time I saw it I didn't like a lot of the Trey stuff...he seemed overly defensive etc. The more I watch it though the more I like it. Todd Phillips has made some wide ranging movies from Gi-Gi Allen "Hated" to Road Trip with Phish in betweem...and I think the guy is only about 30..quite a career already
Members honkylips Posted March 8, 2006 Members Posted March 8, 2006 I have to agree with the general opinion here that the DVD was pretty weak. I remember waiting months for it to come out figuring they would have boatloads of old woody footage, interviews, etc. Since they presented this thing as a tribute to Woody (among other things), it seems like there should have been more footage and stuff about Woody, not Gordon tapping his fingers on walls to make Entwistle noises. I tried showing the DVD to my dad, who is generally pretty interested in music. He was quite interested in it until Gordon became too much. He says, "who the hell is this {censored}-head that is wrecking the movie?" I had to laugh. The old man doesn't know about Phish.

He had some amazing ingredients -- a deceased and widely loved musician (Allan Woody), a great band (Mule), and about 20 of the finest bass players in the world. Oh, and a great album being made. Instead of letting those ingredients shine on their own, he decides to limit their exposure and make it about about him and his theories about bass playing. I love Government Mule and Allen Woody. I also really like Phish. I seriously wanted to punch Gordon in the face when watching this. I still do.
