Members twostone Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 I was wondering when a bass guitar becomes vintage or collectors item ? For example would a Fender JP-90 bass guitar become a collectors item or vintage since these were Fenders crossover bass only made from 90-93 would this bass evently become a vintage collectors item. I couldn't found hardly any info. on this bass from Fender's website. Just wanted to know more about the history of this bass all input welcome and thanks.
Members s4001 Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 Ah, I remember the good 'ol days when 70's instruments were considered cheap and not collectible.....
Members zachoff Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 Cars can get collector's plates at 30 years old.
Members bnyswonger Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 Shortly after I sell it...
Members MageZ Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 When you slap ridiculous price on it. Just check out Ebay.
Members brake Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 it's 30 years with cars, i say it should be the same with gear.
Members sumasmreq Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 For insurance cars are vintage after 20 years I believe, maybe 25. I think 20-25 is good estimate for vintage.
Members bassgirl9 Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 There's a book out there called the Blue Book. It has listings of models and what they're worth. Any decent guitarshop should have an up to date book.
Members bholder Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 If I am reading recent trends properly, I am lead to believe that the answer is "whenever the owner decides to sell it on eBay".

Members Mudbass Posted September 15, 2005 Members Posted September 15, 2005 The difference between vintage and just plain old is in the eye of the beholder.

Members MorePaul Posted September 16, 2005 Members Posted September 16, 2005 when you throw some grape juice and yeast on it well, technically - when you throw some grape juice from a single harvest on it
Members januaryscar Posted September 16, 2005 Members Posted September 16, 2005 My SWR bass 350 is listed as vintage on the SWR website... And its circa late 90's I believe! Perhaps its based on dis-continued (updated) lines...?

Members twostone Posted September 16, 2005 Author Members Posted September 16, 2005 Thanks for the blue book ideal.
Members fintucfin Posted September 16, 2005 Members Posted September 16, 2005 Three decades seem about right. Twenty years just ain't long enough for non custom basses.

Members slapthefunkyfour Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 I remember from somewhere that 25 years old is considered vintage and 40 years old is considered antique. I'm not totally sure though, but it sounds logical.
Members 4string Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 It all depends on the age of the person who you are showing it to is. My kids think anything older than them is vintage. Where as anything from the sixities to me is vintage.

Members Sixgun77 Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 IIRC in Maryland a car no longer has to go through emissions testing once it's 20 years old. You can put historic tags on a car and not have to gt it inspected if it's 25 years old. My brother told me that 80's gear is considered vintage now. 20-25 sounds about right to me. I see Bullet Basses(like I play) on Ebay for up to 600$. I got a MIA Bullet fo 150$ in '91, and last year a MIJ Bullet cost me 280$. These are basses made for about 3 years('81-'83 IIRC)that were pretty much considered to be cheap student models, and I now se people selling them as "vintage Bullet Precision Bass"es. It's like somebody tyring to sell a Pinto and calling it a vintage musclecar!
Members 78pbass Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 The JP-90 was/is a cheap bass assembled in the US of cheap overseas parts. For the greatest majority (and of all the ones Ive played), they didnt sound good, didn't play well and were cheaper feeling than the MIJs available at the same time. Kinda like a cheaper, lamer Highway One. YMMV, but I sold mine cheap and dont regret it at all.
Members jannda Posted September 17, 2005 Members Posted September 17, 2005 I have a 1964 GIBSON EB2 THEY ONLY MADE ABOUT 350 THAT YEAR.vintage but mabe not collectable.
