Mr James Jammerson

or

Mr John Entwhistle

I've got to go with John because he made me want to play bass. He could do more with 4 strings than most guitarists could do with 12:cool:

James made me appreaciate melody and rhythm, That you could make a simple bassline with bare technique and it could blow everyone away.

Jamerson all the way!

I love the Ox (John NOT Sean :p ) but really hate his band. I've fought for decades with it, owned all their releases, woodsheded the riffs.... but I really have to say I dislike the Who! I think there is maybe 4 or 5 songs I can actually enjoy listening to.

Sorry Sean :(

Entwistle, no "H", and Jamerson, only one "M!":D

Jamerson for me. My biggest reason for going with James is that John tends to play like a guitarist tuned down an octave, while Jamerson played the electric like an upright. So instead of playing the bass "guitar," he played the electric bass.

That, and I listen to a song like "The Real Me," and there is a lot of cool stuff in there. Then I came to college, and the jazz combo plays a lot of Motown including Gladys Night and the Pips rendition of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." Even though it doesn't sound half as hard as "The Real Me" or pretty much any John Entwistle I've heard, its pretty damned impossible to play cleanly! And to think he used a whole ONE finger on his right hand!

Another vote for JJ. I grew up in Detroit when all those hits were coming out, and I was deeply impressed. In fact, I ended up playing guitar first, because I thought bass was too hard after hearing enough Motown.

:D

The first band I got into was the Beatles, and I used to listen to a station that played some Beatles. But they'd play lots of Motown too and I always liked that even though at the time I didn't play bass.

Apples and Oranges, man. I bet JJ influenced JE. JJ was the main influence for everybody till JP came along and showed everybody that the Bass could be a frontline instrument. There are a bunch of super fabulous bass players out there that never got "discovered".

SBB hit it right:

"Jamerson for me. My biggest reason for going with James is that John tends to play like a guitarist tuned down an octave, while Jamerson played the electric like an upright. So instead of playing the bass "guitar," he played the electric bass. "

Another vote for Mr. James Jamerson.

Jamerson influenced everyone since, whether they know it (or even admit it) or not. That includes Entwistle and later Jaco himself.

When the Funk Brothers go on stage on "Standing In The Shadows of Motown," the announcer lists the bass players as "Bob Babbitt and the greatest bass player ever to live, the late James Jamerson." He was right.

Who can say? These guy's made their name playing completely different style's of music. Those into groove based playing, and see Jamerson as the ideal for bass players aren't wrong. Neither are those who love the more aggressive rock style of Entwistle. I like them both, and can't say either is better. As for who influences who, who cares. All players bring something of themselves to the table, and both of these guys had other players influence them as well. All the more better for us!

+1 googolplex

Hit the nail right on the head. They both have their redeeming points, and they're both masters of the instrument. Asking us to pick one or the other is like asking us if we wanted to have sex with Carmen Electra or Pamela Anderson. I'd say you need a "both, because I'm smart" poll option.
