I have an Ibanez SRX905 now. The newer ones with the Bartolinis etc... but would like to pick up a simple 4 string for general purposes. I was looking at the Fender MIM Jazz and P's and dont think, even though they're not that much, they're all that for the dough and everyone here seems to think the SX are on par with them.

Which model of SX is the best in the P category? How about the J's?

For the Ps, probably the SPB-62.

For the Js, I like the QMD finished ones a lot.

The electronics among them are pretty much the same between the Ps, the Js, etc. So really its just a matter of picking one with the options you like.

I like rosewood, so I voted the SPB-62.

I just ordered an SX Jazz mayself. Frankly, it looks to me like they're all pretty much the same. Same hardware, pickups, etc. Only difference seems to be cosmetic stuff: different colors, "photo flame" finishes, some have gold hardware, etc.

I have both. Personally I find the stock pickups on the P to be pretty weak, but the stock pickups on the J are pretty good. Might have to do with personal tastes, but I did replace the P with an SD Qtr. Pounder and it was a signficiant improvement. My J (QMD finish) is still stock.

The other difference between the two is the neck. The J is slimmer than the P is. I like the neck on the P, but I love the neck on the J. Going from a 5 to a 4 it may not matter that much to you, but I'd check out the Fender P and J in your local store to give you an idea of the difference.

As for the cosmetics, they are just that. I like the gold on my QMD finish, and the P has the photo flame burst finish. Just a matter of personal taste, and for the small difference in price, I got the "visual upgrades." Quality and playability are the same.
