I was playing with my band tonight and the guitarist were both in drop-D down 1/2 step and I just tuned down 1 1/2 steps and my tone rocked. I think I mihgt adjust how I play a al Time Commerford or Rage and Audioslave and just adjust to that. Anyone else do that?

There are a number of guys on here doing this.

I've been playing 5'ers for quite awhile, as I "need" to have that low B.

I was thinking during my last gig, that for at least half of our tunes I don't need a G string. I think it'd be cool to have a 4 string jazz or p tuned BEAD.

Maybe I should just get Timmy's bass?

i've never been comfortable with the idea of putting that kind of tension on a neck designed for traditional eadg tuning.

although then again i never thought about low-b until i got a 5-string, and now it's becoming a regular requirement in all my tunes.

By contemporary/traditional wisdom BEAD tuning would put less tension on the neck as the B string carries 5 pounds less than the G does.

I was thinking the same thing.

Pretty much just a new set of strings and recutting a nut - I suggest getting a second nut and keeping the original. Most are held in place with a single drop of super glue and ought to pop right off with a bit of a nudge.

Spector just released one. According to their site...

The new Spector Europe Series bass, the Euro 435LX, hand crafted in the Czech Republic. This 4-string bass features a 35" scale length for improved definition at lower pitch tunings and for use as a B-D tuned instrument.

The first artist to use this new model is Robbie Merrill of Godsmack.

My bass is tuned to BEAD. I love it. It's not as irreversible as you think it is.

G strings are overrated. I do everything I need to do on mostly the E A D strings, the B is just nice to be able to be drop bombs every once in a while. I far prefer it to a G string.

My main bass is strung BEAD as are my acoustic and fretless.

No problems with the neck and no filing was needed for any of the basses. My main bass has a 5-string set of strings because I wanted the tension, my fretless and acoustic both have very heavy 4-string sets on which have less tension but are both okay. My guitarist tunes down to B and that's main reason. I have a cheap 5-string but it isn't my best sounding bass so it's just a spare at the moment.

I really like the tone I get when I detune the strings on my EADG bass a step or two. It just seems to give it that extra growl and rumbly... gets really close to that awesome Scott Reader tone...
