Members State 6000
Can you name a few songs? I heard Manring does all kinds of crazy stuff like changing tunings mid-song (doesn't he play a 3 octave bass too?) -so maybe his lines won't be so easy! Members SpaceGhost
Percy Jones. One of my favorite bass players *ever*. Check out the records by the band "Brand X". Phil Collins on drums to boot.
Members LanEvo
There is some REALLY nice fretless work by Stuart Zender on early Jamiroquai. Especially on the "Return of the Space Cowboy" album. Emre

Members zachoff
Pink Floyd - The Wall. IIRC, most of that album is recorded on a fretless.

Members SpaceGhost
Gary Willis is also a very sweet fretless player. Some of his work can be kinda "meh" but a good portion is very tasteful.

Members sunburstbasser
Manring's main bass is a Zon Hyperbass, 3-octave fretless neck with detuners on every saddle AND every tuner. I met him last January after watching him play for a while on one of his smaller fretted basses. He can pluck, slap, tap, and pull off harmonics equally well. I'd say if anything he is comparable in technique to Victor Wooten and his playing is more musical overall. Though Wooten himself has many cool fretless songs with the Flecktones. There are several songs on Little Worlds where the fretless really shines through. Bill Wyman used a fretless for decades with the Stones. He pulled the frets out of his bass, and never put them back in. Different idea, but still good. The Wall has a few fretless tracks (namely "Hey You") but a lot of it was recorded with the fretted bass, too. Steve Bailey uses a fretless very often. Another very capable musician. Members sunburstbasser
Well if we're talking upright then John Pattitucci's playing with Chick's Akoustic band would qualify, would it not? It is a fretless bass, but not a fretless bass guitar. State 600, did you want fretless bass guitar players/songs? I think Richard Bona uses fretless a lot. Members zenfascist
Assorted Fishbone where Norwood uses a fretless. He gets that weird Warwick-y sound, so sometimes you can't tell what the hell he's using. If you don't know Fishbone, shame on you and go here: Http://www.fishbone.net
Members Adrenochrome
Check out Mick Karn when he was playing bass for Gary Numan around 1983. Can't remember the names of the best tracks - sorry.
Members nicebigstrings
My favorite fretless player is Carles Benavent. Anyone heard of that guy? Spanish virtuoso who single-handedly brought bass into flamenco through his playing alongside Paco de Lucia and Camaron de la Isla. Benavent is virtually unknown in North America but hugely influential over there. Eventually he went on to record with Miles. Anyway, my fave fretless track of all time is an incredible duet he did with Paco de Lucia called 'Monasterio de Sal'. It's on Paco's 'Solo Quiero Caminar' album. Great playing and a far cry from that stinky jacuzzi jazz.
