Alright Phish fans...

I have heard a few tunes I like, and I have heard more that I dont like. They seem to fall under two categories: the instrumentals (which I like) and the songs where they sing. I heard something that Catphish pointed out, I think it was "You enjoy Myself" and I really dug that, reminded me of THe Dixie Dreggs. Then I heard some silly song about dinner and a movie that sounded like a hoe-down, I didnt like that one much.

What songs/Albums fall into the instrumental category?

+1

stash is an awesome song - mostly instrumental. the lyrics don't make sense, they just carry melody

the album Farmhouse has some very good tunes on it. Sand and First Tube are great.

try to find some of their live albums, I think there might be a phish-authorized place online where you can download whole concerts. their live stuff is where it really happens. Everything they do is so musical and a good deal of it nicely complex.

bbl is right on. it is going to be hard to find a 100% dorkiness free Phish album. If you like You Enjoy Myself, you may consider jumping right into the live stuff and "Slip, Stich and Pass" is a good place to start.

in fact, many of their songs (mostly the older tunes) have a mix of the quirky lyrics with relatively complex compostions.

try songs like Reba, Stash and Foam for starters.

"Run like an antelope, out of control"

I love that song (from Lawn Boy, IIRC).

The istrumental albums are the first few. try

1. Junta

2. A live One

3. Lawn Boy

4. Rift

I really suggest you check out the live material because the studio just doesn't get to the same level. congrats on listening to phish. +1 to Slip Stitch, great CD especially for bass playing, Mike really lays it down on "weekapaug Groove" and "mike's song." good luck.

Phish has a pretty big tape trading community. If you want to get into some of their live stuff, go on google and type in something like "Phish tape trade" and you should come up with a bunch of boards. Basically, you send a dude a few blank cds with shipping costs, he sends you a show back. It's completely legal (or was a few years back when i was doing the whole phish circuit). As Phishgordo said, the studio albums really don't capture the essence of phish. You need to hear a live show.

"Lizards" starts out a bit dorky but goes into a great instrumental that's half the song with a kickass piano solo. Live from 3/92 Sacramento is my favorite.

"Divided Sky" Zappa-like intro with a great outro. Almost entirely instrumental. Live or off Junta

The Curtain - Live

Esther - starts out a bit weird but is worth listening to all the way through to get the feel. Junta

Taste - Off Slip Stitch and Pass

I use Singing Fish to search for live Phish.

The thing to remember about Phish is that they are Phish. Phishheads often think Phish is the greatest band EVER and that they do everything. But they do everything Phish-style.

If you like bluegrass, rock, pop, jazz, funk, classical music, and jam type stuff in the key of happy; or any combination of the few, then you will surely enjoy Phish.

I was big into Phish for a while, but Phish mainly served as a springboard from where I jumped deeper into other genres.

There are far better jazz groups, bluegrass groups, funk groups, rock groups, pop groups, classical music groups. But Phish is Phish, and you have to enjoy them for what they are. Some folks can't stand them. Phish is known a lot for their 20 minute jams which are a fast beat, keyboard buildup, light drum buildup, a semi-solo on bass, and a full on solo on guitar. They do this for 5 minutes, and when you think it is over, they do a light hit, and then rewind to 5 minutes ago, and do it again. I'm not a fan of that.

But that takes up only 1/4 of a Phish show. The other 3/4 is always going to show you some fun stuff.

Just buy a live CD, preferably with "Punch You In the Eye" See what you like, and what you don't like.

for easy free legal mp3 downloads of Phish shows check out:

http://www.momadance.com

i realize this is a no-no in the trading community. mp3s are a lossy format and therefore "not worthy of trading", but whatever....it's a great place to start for someone that just wants to check stuff out and not get really involved in lossless formats.

I also recommend the song "Fluffhead"...silly lyrics at first, but very complex composition after...

also see "David Bowie", "The Curtain", "Reba", "McGrupp", "It's Ice", "Guyute"....most of these have some lyrics, but all have complex instrumentals parts that make up most of the song.

Enjoy!
