Members Tommy Gunz
Without changing anything? Try to pluck closer to the bridge.
Members Joey Joe Joe
I play my bass strapped up fairly high on my body, I find I can pluck the strings a lot harder this way. It helps with the growl.
Members oldivor
Maybe using a pick?

Members Zebra
How about: heavy stainless steel strings, bridge position plucking and a somewhat mid-hearty EQ? It takes some effort to get growl from a P. I'm currently getting more growl with my P with the same setup as listed above than ever before, although I only have 3 strings on it right now... I'll let you on a little secret, the moment you put the 4th string back on, you'll loose that growly tone again.

Gagh, don't let the Ox see this SS strings will have more treble bite, rather than what I consider "growl." Though they should have an adequate amount of that for you. A mid-hearty EQ with a boosted gain setting, and near bridge plucking are certainly the way to go. Or, just add a bridge pickup
Members Zebra
Lol, probably true. I hadn't really thought of it that way. Well Ox swears by that method anyway, if that means anything. I guess it kinda works.Hmm, just uptuned the E to see if the growl would go away, but not really. It's not a whole lot of growl anyway. I've got it plugged into my computer right now, and my soundcard is awfully growly, if you can believe that.
Members DerekDRP
actully i do want my baby to come to life ( lots of growl ) right now even the g string vibrates the floor. but i want more of it lol.
Members sunburstbasser
It seems to me that Stainless Strings do growl more. They are certainly brighter but they also seem to have a more solid low end (where the growl is). A good amp helps, and you have to have some high end or you just get kind of a woofy growl. Members der oxenrig
Get Rotosounds or D'Addario ProSteels. And a tube amp. Crank it. Maple fingerboards tend to give a bit more growl as well.

I used a cut-down version of this setup for a long time, but I find that my Ashdown has better growl if not as much.

New strings are a necessity if you want a lot of growl. I've good and bad about the Warwick amps. I'd definately do some research before buying one of those. The Ampeg tube amps are great all around though unless you don't like that Ampeg tone. But who doesn't like that?
