Members beam Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 Well, I was at GC today seeing what they had, and I saw a set of these on the shelf. .45 .65 .80 .100 Now, as for how they sound. They sound pretty good if you ask me. Very round-ish in tone, but you can tell they are a bit more subdued. The only problem is...and I believe it was Lug that pointed this out....they feel friggin'.....sticky. I have no clue what it is, but these strings feel slightly sticky. They don't leave any residue or anything on your fingers, but when you try and slide up and down the fretboard on them, you can tell that they kinda grab at your fingers. I'm not at all a fan of this....especially after really getting into the flats that are on my T-40...smooth as a baby's ass. I'm going to go put the DR Lo-Riders back on the Schecter, and leave it at that. I think these will end up on my SX(so it wasn't a total waste of $30), as I can't remember the last time it was restrung(hell, I think it has a year old set of Slowounds on it), nor do I play it that often. Just thought I'd share
Members T. Alan Smith Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 Great. I see I've got a lot to look forward to. I've got GHS Briteflats for my Essex. I haven't installed them yet 'cause I've just installed the Peacock Blue coated DR's on it. But, I've been saving the Briteflats for recording. I thought of installing them on my fretless 'Ray, but I can't bring myself to remove the Thomastiks, even after all these years! So I'll sit on 'em 'til the Essex is ready.
Members bholder Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 True halfrounds have sharp edges on the windings. Some other brands are a bit more rounded. I had the same experience, though I forget what brand(s) seemed to feel less of that "grabbiness".
Members T. Alan Smith Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 Yeah, technically, the Briteflats are "goundwounds" but seem to have that grabby feel to 'em. I just peeked inside the wrapper.
Members beam Posted September 25, 2005 Author Members Posted September 25, 2005 Well, nevermind on using them on the SX...I cut them for the Schecter which is 2x2...the SX is like a Fender, all 4 tuners on the top...so the G and probably the D don't reach I guess they can just be backup strings for the Schecter, since they are cut for it. T. Alan, I hope you have better luck than I do Though I must say....the next set of strings that go on the Schecter will be the La Bella full flats
Members speddling Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 I dig the D'Addario Half-Rounds.... more round sounding than flat IMO. I ended up saying f*** it and installed Stainless Rounds on my fretless P6.... that is what I had always used in the past and I'm happy again. Once my SC fretless 6 is done, I'm putting Labella Flats on the fretless P6

I've got a inline 4, inline 5, reversed inline 5 and a 5+1.... sorry, they won't fit anything I own. I played a fretless 6 last weekend with 6 month old LaBella flats and I really dug it! I was gonna try chromes but I think the the deep talkers will suit me fine

That's what - the second time in about as many days? Seriously man, that's no fun a'tall. But all this string talk makes me want to get some heavier gauge strings and tune it BEAD - however, for me, it's round-wounds all the way! Dustin
Members lug Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 My Dean Markley halfrounds: http://users3.ev1.net/~woodd/huntforcarvin1.mp3 Grabbiest strings I've ever played. Love the sound, though.
Members jbryant8159 Posted September 25, 2005 Members Posted September 25, 2005 The D'adarrios are super grippy until they are worn in. But, by then they start to sound like flats. Or deadish rounds.

Besides, those halfs can be backup strings

I went through many different sets of strings till I came across D'addario Chromes which is my current string, 105-50. Love them on my 78 P Bass. Play like glass........ If I had back all the money I spent on Bass strings trying them out I could probrobly buy a new Bass. But I can't look at it like that. Experience is costly, some pay a little and some pay alot., but you will pay. You have to try though and find out what works for you. OMB:cool:

Members dave_bass5 Posted September 26, 2005 Members Posted September 26, 2005 I had a set of ENR's on my HW1 Jazz for 2 days and took them off.yes they are sticky and i thought they sounded to much like flats. i was looking for something in the middle of my TI's and Chromes and Fender Nicks and was told halfs would do the job.Im not against flats but i just wanted a bit more zing in my sound, hence going from TI's to Chromes as i was told they were brighter but not bright enough. My band noticed the improvment in tone when i got XL's and now im back to 7150's and the band agree its the best tone i have had in a long time (since i switched to TI's).just my personal taste of course.
