what kind of bass are you installing it in? if I'm not mistaken, that pickup is designed for an old p-bass that only uses one. it will not fit in any bass with jazz or the split p-style pickups without modification.

You have a P-bass, right?

That's a single-coil p-bass pickup, used on the very first precision basses. What you'll need is a split-coil precision pickup. It will be something more like this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=bass/search/detail/base_pid/302280/

Oh, and after Christmas, it's impossible to modify gear or install new pieces until March. The equinox and moon phases and all...

Sorry - I just had to. Installing on your own isn't too hard - if you know how to solder or if you're willing to learn. Other than the soldering, it's a matter of running a screwdriver.

Technically, it's just one pickup that has two coils connected with wires.

As far as brands go, the standard replacement suggestions are Seymour-Duncan and Dimarzio. I'm a big fan of Rio Grandes, though.

Have fun!

I used to have an SX P/J with Rio Grandes in it.

Here's an Mp3 clip. At the time, my bass had extremely dead strings, so with new strings the sound will be a bit more sparkly on the top end.

I want heart feeling sound as well . with minimal efforts.

the only time I played a bass a quarter pounder in it was a while ago for a short time, but I remember it being a pretty fat sound. it took the traditional round p-bass tone to a new level. if I had a p-bass, that's the pickup I'd throw in.

Those are Rio Grande Muy Grande p bass pickups. Sorry, Musician's Friend doesn't carry them. However, Music Toyz does.

http://www.musictoyz.com/guitar/pickups/rio.php#bass

They're more expensive than other bass pickups, too, but they do thump like none other.

They are also "open coil" pickups, meaning there is no plastic cover on them. They actually feel very comfortable to play, but I just thought I'd let you know, since it took me a while to figure out why they look kinda funky.

Dustin...

Love the sound on that. That's pretty much the sound I'd like as well... what SX are you running, what Rio Grandes, what amp/speakers, and finally how much did it all cost/how much work did it take? Basically, is it doable for a begginer bassist with $500 (Canadian) to spend on a bass, amp, cables, and tuner (and possibly also hard case) with some, although not too much, electrical experiance?

Philly

P.S.: BTW, I love the tune... the first bit sounds a little like something I like to play on an acoustic guitar, although mine takes more from "Minnie The Moocher" than your's does...

Haha, yeah it's a great song. I think I have the piano notes for it somewhere, although I learnt the low end from a friend, and I learnt it on piano. I figured out a riff based on the upper part of Minnie The Moocher on my acoustic guitar, and since it only uses four strings I can play it on a bass too. I've got a crappy recording of it on my computer, but I'm not sure if that's the part you're looking for. The bassline for the piano is pretty long and kinda tricky on guitar. I think this site may have it, but I'm not sure. In any event, probably a useful site to have bookmarked...

Wow, thanks.

The bass is just a standard SX P/J - the model SPJ-62 from Rondo Music (www.rondomusic.net if you haven't heard of them). The bass was modded with a BadAss II bridge and then Rio Grande Muy Grande pickups. That clip was just the P pickup solo-ed. The clip was recorded direct into my computer with an M-Audio OmniStudio USB interfact. The clip was boosted a touch for volume, but no compression or anything was used.

That bass is definately within your price range. You're looking at about $120 for the bass, $40 or so for the bridge, and $160 or so for both pickups. I no longer have the bass - I traded it for an Ibanez. The bass was wonderful - but the neck went bad on me. It must have decided that it had enough temperature changes from MT to OK and back.

BTW, the clip is just a little thing I mess around with - It's just a minor pentatonic thing.

Dustin's P clip is the way a P should sound. Thats why you should get Rio pickups.

the e string has liek too much base in it . then lol.
