Members baracuda2004 Posted September 26, 2005 Members Posted September 26, 2005 ok for those of you who don't know, i've got a PEAVEY classic 400, and a PEAVEY TVX 410 cab, the only problem is i like a crystal clear low bass tone with little to no distortion, the problem is THE CLASSIC 400 is all tube so it's really powerful, is there any type of pedal/effect/box/anything that can stop the distortion i'm kinda new to all of this stuff i've always just ran my bass straight to my cab with no effects or anything... or do i just need a better cab to handle the power with out it distorting? i'm confused... keep in mind i'm 19 and have been playing bass for about 2 years so take it easy on me please... oh and thanks ahead of time for any info you can give me..

Members Fran da Man Posted September 26, 2005 Members Posted September 26, 2005 What kind of music do you or are you going to play? And are you talking about a band situation or private practice?
Members baracuda2004 Posted September 26, 2005 Author Members Posted September 26, 2005 i've tried that i think, we play metal, but not like most metal we like a massive bass presence kinda like SOAD, so a little distortion is acceptable and needed, it just tends to take away from the clean sound i love live situation
Members Fran da Man Posted September 26, 2005 Members Posted September 26, 2005 Ya know something? in your case the very thing you seem to like may be the problem..."tubes".Borrow a SS 300w head and see whats different side by side to tube.
Members bnyswonger Posted September 26, 2005 Members Posted September 26, 2005 If it's a master volume amp, run the master all the way up - this will give you the cleanest high-power sound. I have no experience with that particular Peavey cab, but you've got a lot of juice there for a 4 10" cab...consider adding another or going to an 8x10".
Members baracuda2004 Posted September 26, 2005 Author Members Posted September 26, 2005 i was thinking of getting a PEAVEY TVX 115 cab to add on to it, but thanks for the suggestions. Oh and will adding another cab really cut down on the distortion? i didn't know that...

Adding a cab will allow you to get more SPL using less amp power than with one cab, so it should cut down the distortion.
