Members Morning Missile
I play mostly rock/metal and I need full punchy bass without loosing the bottom end. This would be for recording...and would be 100% DI box or other direct method, no real amp. Which of these do you recommend?
Members zachoff
Really, for direct recording purposes, a MIM Fender would probably be easiest to dial in.
Members basshunter
I recently picked up a NS-2000 Q5 and am quite happy with it. Haven't recorded it though, so no comments there.

Members burdizzos
Get out and play some basses! Another couple of basses in that range that deserve a look would be the G&L Tribute and the MTD Kingston/Heir.

Members zachoff
The dude's only going to be recording with it... I've heard from many people that recording an active bass is more difficult than a passive & I've also heard from many people that recording a Fender Jazz or P is way easier than anything else... Have I heard wrong here?
Members Vespucio
I think you should try different basses before buying one.My suggestion is:G&L L2500
Members zenfascist
Try a Stingray 5 string. You'll either love it or say "it's pretty cool, but I'm not a stingray kind of guy"... so it's definitely a bass worth taking a look at if you haven't already. Yep, try a bunch and then narrow down your choices. Yamaha has some decent 5'ers in that price range too.

I agree, passive is the way to go when recording.
