So how are those Ashdown Mag 300H's compared to a GK 400RB

My 400RB broke for the second time, and I'm getting tired of getting it fixed. I really miss that GK tone, but I like the idea of getting a fresh new amp and Avatar cab to replace my cat hair covered Hartke 2x10 Transport.

Ive got em both (the EB is basically the same as the MAG, just smaller). Ashdown is warmer, GK is grindier and tighter.

Never heard of problems with a GK in that way though...

Not to hijack, but just curious...what happened to your GK?

Is it the original one, or the -III or -IV?

Its the original. The first time it broke was because of an electrical problem, sparks started coming out of it and it shocked me. I got it mostly fixed by an amp tech. He couldn't fix the boost on/off circuit and the decible cut switch unless he ordered some special parts from GK that would cost me a lot more than it was worth. It didn't bother me though since I never messed with the footswitch or turned on the decible cut switch. It worked perfectly for my needs. And then I let someone borrow it who decided to try to mess around with a footswitch. Dead amp. He unknowingly cut off the boost and somehow it stopped working permenately.

I'm thinking of taking it back to the same guy... maybe he'll re-fix it for free? I'll have to find out if he's still in business.

The two amps sound basically the same. Though the GK appears to have more options for tone shaping, I've found that just the 5-band EQ on the MAG is more than sufficient for any situation and easier to use than the 4-band+contour+presence+boost of the GK.

The low end response of the MAG is far greater than the GK, using the same cab and bass. I usually turn it up to about 2 o'clock, and the low mids a little higher. Maxing out the lows on the GK gives about the same amount of bottom but for whatever reason it sounds more stressed out or something. Like the amp isn't comfortable with that much low end. Kicking in the deep switch on the Ashdown totally drowns the GK in bassiness.

The GK is much cleaner in the top end. Where I used to cut my highs with the GK, I have to BOOST them to get the same presence on the Ashdown.

The GK is supposed to be a bit heavier in the growl factor, but I don't notice it (possibly because I never restring). It has a bit more aggresiveness than the MAG but not a lot, and cranking the mids on the MAG up really makes it sound thick, Steve Harris like.

I consider the MAG overall superior to the GK. It'll do 90% of what the GK does, and a lot that the GK just won't even be able to attempt. The sub-harmonizer is also really cool and if used tastefully can make a song go from just simmering to really frying.
