What amp to choose?

Hello

I'm pretty new to the the whole bass thing, but now I'll probably join a band some friends started up as a bass player. So what I need for the rehearsal room is an (at least) decent amp - the problem is that I don't know anything about amps... We're going to play some sort of death metal I guess, at least it's going going to be fast and heavy.

So, does anyone have any recommendations? I don't have too much cash to spend, but I don't want a piece of crap either. Used or new doesn't really matter.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Low End :)

Sounds like you need a 200ish watt combo. For the really heavy metal, I would suggest a 2x10 combo, so it has a better chance of cutting through the distortion on the guitars.

Yorkville makes a great model, called the XM200T. It's loud, has lots of punch and clarity, and should more than suit your needs I think.

Do you plan on playing with a lot of distortion in your own tone?

There are a few other good choices out there, but without knowing your price range, it's hard to say :)

Depending on how much you are willing to spend and how long you plan on playing for, most of my combo amps have been upgraded and sold away.

If you can get a cheap Peavey or Avatar 4x10s that's used. Put a cheap top on it and they will both be useable some day and not become obsolete.

If I could go back, my first rig would be some 4x10, a PA amp, and some preamp.

Yo.

Peavey. Except for higher end brands like Eden, Eden Nemesis, & Genz Benz, is best choice out there imo. Extremely reliable. Good sound, especially with processor of choice in front of it. Find a used Peavey TKO or similiar for very low cost, very reliable, bass combo. Yorkvilles ok, But haveing owned Yorkville as well as Peavey, Likes Peaveys sound better.

How 'bout a Nemesis NC 210 combo with a Tube Works Blue Tube in front? The tens are nice and focused, and the Blue Tube will give you good dirt when you want it.

It kinda depends on if you want new or used. As for used, you can't go wrong with an Ampeg and a 4x10 cab. Galien-Kreuger has some pretty decent heads as well that aren't wallet drainers if you're looking for new. Ashdowns are 300 watts for $300 new..

Thanks a lot for the input, much appreciated!

I ended up getting the Laney R3H head and the R410 4x10 cab and as far as I can tell the sound is good! Got it new for far less than it costs in the US/UK, and that isn't very common over here in Sweden. The used market over here isn't that great and I needed an amp as soon as possible, so I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a bad choice for some reason...

Eh, what the hell, if it turns out I don't like it I can at least sell it for the price I bought it for!

Thanks again!
