Members waytoodeep03
Can it be done? The monitor is an 8ohm load like this one. I want to know if I can plug my amp into this along with my avatar 2x10 to get that extra sound? http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i-YAM-SM15V.html
Members T. Alan Smith
I done it lots of times. Works great. I only own an 8 ohm 2x10 cab, but rent an 8 ohm PA cab when I need it. It'll usually be a Yorkville 1x12(w/horn) monitor wedge from the local shop.
Members waytoodeep03
How different sounding is it than a regular bass cab? These things run pretty cheap.

PA cabs == full range Bass cabs == Full range It will sound sort of like playing bass through the PA... which usually sounds good

These things run pretty cheap. Pretty different. PA cabs are designed to deliver high quality full range sound, so they should work well to offer a more 'balanced' sound. Bass cabs are contoured to be more pleasing to bass players. By the way, you get what you pay for. Shy away from cheap. If your music means much to you, you'll invest in proper tools. Sound fetishization. There are "tonal qualities" in bass cabs that are lacking in PA cabs, in the same way that, say, flat and round wound strings have different tonalities. Alan Smith
Originally posted by waytoodeep03 If that is the case why do people go out and buy more bass cabs when PA cabs are like half the price? Because bass cabs generally sound better to bass players, as they're contoured to bass. I know, I prefer a quality bass cab to a quality PA cab. Members megadan
Yes.. like they said, bass cabs give you the sound of bass... PA cabs give you the rull range of sound, without the curve/tone effects of a bass cab. If you like your acoustic tone, you could use PA cabs pretty well. A good PA cab is more than the typical bass cab. I paid $1,500 for my two PA tops.
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted September 30, 2005 CMS Author Share Posted September 30, 2005 First be aware that the SM-15 cab posted is a 250w RMS cab. The 500w spec is Program. The driver is an Eminence OEM product. It's probably similar to an Alpha or Beta 12. There's nothing stopping you from using a PA cab. The box is much smaller than is ideal for bass, hence differences in low end extension and overall tone. I concur with J the D; you sure could go a lot higher in price with PA cabinets than with bass cabs. Meyer comes to mind.
