Members Troy Ponce Posted October 1, 2005 Members Posted October 1, 2005 I've been told to look into some of his stuff, and his discography is just massive. Can somebody suggest a good starting point for his stuff either studio, solo, or other work?
Members T. Alan Smith Posted October 1, 2005 Members Posted October 1, 2005 I'm listening to killer stuff on his website now.
Members nicebigstrings Posted October 1, 2005 Members Posted October 1, 2005 Miles Davis - 'The Man With the Horn' would be a good place to start. That's what really put him on the map in the bass world back in the early 80s. Miles' 'Star People', 'Amandala' and 'Tutu' are all good too. I haven't heard Marcus' live disc yet but it's supposed to be killer. Yeah, that guy has more cool ideas per square foot than just about anybody in Bassland IMHO.
Members s4001 Posted October 1, 2005 Members Posted October 1, 2005 I picked up the David Sanborn stuff that someone here recently mentioned. Marcus is all over it. Has lots of writing credits, too.
Members zenfascist Posted October 1, 2005 Members Posted October 1, 2005 Hehehe that was probably me who mentioned the Sanborn. The "As We Speak" record is excellent.
Members Fran da Man Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 I think Tales is the best one for his more R&B sound.
Members fintucfin Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 He's a beyond great bass player. He's a fantastic composer, if I had 3% of his ability... And so it goes.
Members Newget Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 I have no useful input but I will tell you that I have the Marcus Miller sig. Jazz bass(main axe as of now), and I also use Marcus Miller fatbeam strings, but I can't stomach the music he is involved with. Obviously he is an oustanding player, but smooth jazz leaves a nasty taste in my bass. God, I love listening to him play, but its torture!
Members readybeans Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 saying that what M2 is into is smooth jazz is like saying funk is disco or saying Pat Boone is rock n roll
Members The Aardvark Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 I have nothing to add, but if this goes to the second page, my parody thread will make no sense. Soooooo, BUMP.
Members Markee Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 Oh hell yes! I'm listening to Silver Rain as I write.
Members Newget Posted October 2, 2005 Members Posted October 2, 2005 Originally posted by readybeans saying that what M2 is into is smooth jazz is like saying funk is disco or saying Pat Boone is rock n roll I understand your point, but all I ever heard from him is smooth jazz. I'm sure there are other styles but in the beginning when I gave a listen, at that time, it was smooth jazz. Perhaps you can contribute to the thread with a disc that is way far off from my understanding of MM music involvement. I can tell you this, I got Buckshot Lafonque years ago and hated it, and its sound. It was torture to listen to sweet bass playing over crap music.
