Members bassballs Posted October 3, 2005 Members Posted October 3, 2005 I've been checking them out. They are tunes E-A-D-G, doubled/ octave. I also noticed that some had the higher octave first as opposed to the lower. Why? Is there a difference in sound? Is it just preference? I haven't played on an 8 string that has the higher octave string set first. I've only played 8 strings that have the lower octave first.
Members greenshag Posted October 3, 2005 Members Posted October 3, 2005 I am not sure why some of them have the lower octave first, or the higher octave first, but I have played both, and I only noticed a slight bit more higher octave sound with the higher octave first....I do love an 8 string though! especially with a bit of overdrive, and a chorus pedal....

Members takeout Posted October 3, 2005 Members Posted October 3, 2005 If you play fingerstyle, you want the octave string "under" so your finger strikes it first. If you play with a pick, you want it "over" - assuming you play mainly downstrokes.

Members the hammer Posted October 3, 2005 Members Posted October 3, 2005 some times which string comes first will depend if you are playing with your fingers or with a pick. For pick players the octave string will come first and usually for finger players the bass string will come first.
