Allright, so I was in a musicstore today and saw an old and beaten up ric they are selling. But I have never seen one like that before.

It was dark blue in colour, no pickguard, standard rick pickup config, painted neck and black name plate on the headstock. Standard Ric fretboard inlays and 4 or 5 knobs. Anyone knows what model it is? and maybe what its worth?

Find some pictures of the 4004, see if thats what it was. If not...A knockoff, perhaps? Or a super-rare 4002?

Its not a 4004, it was my first thought, but it has standard pickups, not the 4004 config. I doubt its a knockoff, but perhaps, and then its a great copy.

It's probably a 4004 that someone put a horseshoe type in. It wouldn't be unheard of. Look around the bridge pup. If the paint goes into the rout and there's definitley no PG, no binding then there's only three possibilities. A fake, a refin on a 4004, or some kind of 4004 special order/ prototype. Most likely it's a modified 4004. Blue was a common color for them and it'd be easy to put in the pup. If you could get a pic of it, myself or someone here could peg it for ya.

By any chance did you look to see if it had a serial number on the jackplate? If there's no number/letters there, it isn't a Ric. If it's a bolt-on neck with two pickups, it's probably not a Ric.

What argues most against it being a Ric is that it's got the 4001-4003 style pickups, but no pickguard. Doesn't sound like anything they've done.

I will check for these things today or tomorrow. The stores bass expert wasnt in when I was there last time, so Im going to ask him.

No pickguard?

Bolt-on?

Two pickups?

Black nameplate?

It's probably a Rickenbacker 2030/20-0 Hamburg bass. They're a simpler line that they made in the 80's. Look in the gallery section of Ric's website. They're kind of unusual.

Asked around and the guy said it was a refinished 4003 with the pickguard removed. It had a serial on hte jackplate so it looks authentic.

Ric routed straight to the neck pup and routed larger than the pup. It was either filled or that's a 4004.

How much they want for it?

Around 1000 bucks, it was in really bad shape, but for Iceland its not really much.

Yeah I can't imagine filling it and making it look like anything but crap, plus....no way to get to any wiring at all.

Why would anyone {censored} with a great instrument like that?????

Only justifiable reason would be a previous owner having already trashed it...

I hate to say it, but the best sounding ric I've heard is Dave Meros' and he has 2 Jazz pups as well as the original Ric pups in his. I have no idea how it's wired up but it sounds like Squire + Beef. :D

Certain things in your description don't add up. By "standard Ric fretboard inlays," do you mean the triangle inlays? And is the body style like that of a regular 4000 series? If so, then there would have been a very large cavity and unsightly routing when the pickguard was removed, because this would have to be a 4001 or 4003 if it is in fact a Ric. Removing the pickguard and making the bass still look good would have required either filling the cavity and rerouting for electronics (very unlikely they did this) or placing a veneer over the entire face of the body, adding cavity access plates to the back and refinishing the whole thing. This would be my guess as to what they did, so I would check it closely to make sure the front of the body is solid and structurally sound. A refinished veneer might look ok from a distance, but I'd avoid the bass if this is what they've done. Even in Iceland this would not be a good bass for any amount of money.

It has the triangular inlays, 4001/3 body shape. The guy in the store said he filled the cavity, dont know how, but its a rather poor craftmanship. Also it was really beaten up and also I noticed a large crack in the headstock. The gas faded away, and is now gone. Why buy a beated up to {censored} ric with poor mods for 1000 when I could order a new one for 1400$
