Members philthygeezer
My girlfriend just confessed to a secret desire to play piano ever since she was a child. I'm thinking a keyboard fed into a small 150 watt active Yorkville keyboard amp. What would be a good solid make of keyboard or small piano for up to $1000-$1500 tops (preferably btw $500 and $900)? Members The Insomniac
I know nothing about keyboards but our keyboard player just bought an Alesis QS6.2 and it sounds pretty killer to me. So I would guess that $500 will get you something pretty decent. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/src=00633/search/detail/base_pid/705537
Members L-1329
For that budget you could get a new Korg Triton LE 61 key workstation. I would imagin that there are a ton of great basic keyboards for much less than that also if you don't need sequencing and other features. I'm eyeing up the Triton LE 76 key, and they seem to go for about $1200...
Members scarecrowbob
Did you post this on the KB forum? They love these questions. One thing to think of: you should get a nice hammer action if your GF wants to play piano...

They're a tad on the gear snob side. With their advice you may wind up with a Triton workstation with external analog patches and modeling consoles. Members Kelemvor
I just bought a Casio PX100 Privia a month ago. I was looking for something with 88 weighted keys that sounded like a piano-- no frills needed (besides midi). The keyboard was 500 at guitar center and they threw in the 100 dollar wooden stand as part of a promotion. I saved so much money I ended up buying some software, a few midi cables, the top of the line sustain pedal, and some other goodies, and STILL came in below my budget. I know people will talk down on it just because its a casio, but It just met all my needs and I really just wanted something to run into my computer to write music and take interactive lessons through the midi interface. Members greenshag
{censored} the triton, go for a Yamaha P120 or P250. The P250 goes for $1800 new The P120 goes for $1100 new With the Yamaha you wouldn't need speakers or an amp for the most part, as it does have built in speakers. If that is a tad to expensive for your tastes, Yamaha does make a P90 which goes for about $1000 new. The action on the Yamaha P series is to die for, as what probably every single "piano" styled player in the KSS will tell you... If that is a bit too much for your budget, the new Casio Privias are actually a good buy for the money, the sounds are not that "great", but the action is pretty nice for that level of digital piano, and I have found that action is extremely important when purchasing a digital piano...IMO, the Tritons action stinks horribly bad, the keybed is way to plastic feeling, and clunky...and I have never been a fan of the Alesis QS series. just my 2 cents... The action is identical to a real piano. A piano you never need to have tuned. Get one, they're really nice.
Members TheDarxide
I've got one of the basic Yamaha's, the PS175, i think, and it's great, so i'm sure the rest of their is good. To be fair on the keyboard forum, they were helpful when i asked the same question.....
Members SA Rios
If you are just looking for a great piano sound with graded hammer action get the p60.http://www.zzounds.com/item--YAMP60It can be used with an amp and it also has really nice sounding, loud built in speakers. And its right where you want to be with the price.
