hey guys!

i was wondering if someone of you could give me some advice concerning retubing an Ampeg SVT Classic head. the tubes are still ok... anyway, i want it to sound great cause i'll be in the studio with my band to record our next album. of course, i could just use the originals but there must be a better way :)

oh yeah, and talking about ampeg.... svt classic or svt 2 pro? what do you prefer?

cheers, peter

If the tubes are still okay, why are you retubing? You shouldn't be laying out that kind of cash unless something is actually wrong with the current tubes.

I'm going on eight years on my current set, including tours, practices, and sundry other gigs. Some Ampegs from the 70's still have their original perfectly-functional tubes.

I'd only retube if you think the amp has lost it's mojo or has had some peaks/drops in volume recently suggesting some tube issues.

If da mojo iz still dere, den don't mess widdit!! :D

Some shameless plug---anyone want to buy my Ampeg SVT-III? It's NOT the Pro version--earlier model.

If your power tubes are okay but you want sound improvement, you might want to just replace the preamp tubes. That will definitely affect your sound and it will be a lot easier on your wallet.

As far as original svt vs. svt II, I would say svt II (I want one soo badly  ) but that's just personal preference. The II will give you a lot more options and "modernize" your sound (for lack of a better word), but the original will give you that svt tone that you can't get from anything else.
