Members Ole Man Blues Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 who are 6 string Guitar players (or other instruments) converted to Bass and how did that happen? Myself I was a 6 string Guitar player started playing in 1963 just after the Beatles landed. Played rock and Blues. Eventually playing nothing but the Blues, hence the moniker. After I got my life right and started going to church every Sunday our worship team needed a Bass Player so I converted and have enjoyed the ride ever since. I found the Bass to be the instrument I am well suited for...... OMB
Members zachoff Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 I started out on bass, but these days I'm playing my guitar more. Weird.
Members mlwarriner Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 junior year of high school, the bassist in our jazz band was quitting. so i went to the teacher and told him i could play. nobody else wanted to do it, so i got the gig. had never held a working bass in my life, let alone had any idea how to play. 15 years ago, and i'm still playing. never played guitar.
Members L-1329 Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Started upright in the orchestra way back in grade school. Started bass guitar a couple years later, still play. Bass for me! Of course I have found that I love noodling around on my little sixer...
Members the hammer Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 I started by guitar in 1982 after being inspired by Kiss and Cheap Trick to pick up the instrument. In December of 1983 a friend of mine who was a session musician in Nashville at the time was putting an R&B group together to play some gigs. He was looking for a bass player and asked me "You play bass, right?" I lied and said "Sure" thinking how hard can it be with only 4 strings. He said "Well you got the bass spot in my band if you want it." I went out and bought a red Hondo II explorer at a pawn shop for $100 and woodshedded over the Christmas holiday and play my first gig on bass in January. I haven't looked back since.
Members lug Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Started on bass, didn't get a guitar till the 21st century.
Members 12StringThunder Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 I started on Tuba and when jazz band time came around I joined as a bass player 3 weeks before I got my first bass
Members Jonny Five Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Took Classic piano lessons from around the age of 8 to the age of 16. Quit instruments for a while, worked on musical theater stuff. Two years ago (sophomore year of college), a guitar player asked me to play bass for a one off performance. I loved it, and I've been playing ever since. Thank god for the Piano, it makes theory a lot easier to wrap my mind around.
Members james on bass Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Piano.Added CelloThen added voice. Then bass.then guitarthen mandolin. I need to add some talent one of these days.
Members mounds Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Started playing guitar when I was 11.. Decided I wanted to play bass like 3-4 years ago, because every person I know is a guitarist (and all the local bands were looking for bassists). As it turns out, I enjoy playing bass more than guitar a lot of the time. I still play both, but I play bass more frequently nowadays.
Members bassplayer7770 Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 I started out on bass and haven't looked back. A cousin of a friend of mine gave my friend his Hondo P-Bass copy and a Gorilla combo amp he had in storage, and my friend gave it to me with the understanding that I'd have to pay for repairs. My friend later picked up guitar, then we convinced another friend to buy some drums...
Members T. Alan Smith Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 I started on trombone, then went to keys before coming back to the low end. Strings are much cooler than slides in the bass clef.
Members Jumpy Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Started on bass although I wanted a GTR my Dad said I should get a bass first and sence he paid for it I got a bass and never looked back.
Members B-Bottom Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 started on guitar. Played that for a year or two off and on in high school. I didn't do anything instrument wise for at least a year then i picked up bass. I tried playig a guitar the other day and had a hell of a time trying to do it. I felt like I was going to break the neck. And I couldn't get over how close together the strings and frets are. One of these days I'll pick a guitar up again and work on it, for now though I'm sticking with bass. I've been dabbling wiht the harmonica off and on and really wouldn't mind learnign how to play the drums or piano
Members Melanie Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Started on bass.My best mate was a bass player and left her gear round my house once. She said I could mess around with it if I wanted. I took to it straight away.
Members bassplayer7770 Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 After reading T. Alan's post, I guess I should also mention that I played trumpet in middle school and junior high. I started playing bass just after high school.
Members zachoff Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 Yeah, I played viola in grade school and 1 year of Jr. High, then switched to drums for a year, then switched to bass & now I noodle on a guitar but still am a {censored}load better at bass & play bass in band situations.

Members DerekDRP Posted October 7, 2005 Members Posted October 7, 2005 A few years back I was over at a friend's house, and he had a drumset. So I starting playing the drum's for like 5 minuts and he thought I had been playing for like a year, Becuase it sounded that good. Sense then I really never liked the drums to say the least. Now I play my bass.
