Please Recommend a Bass

Hey everyone. I'm the singer in a hard rock band. My bassist only has one bass, and we have songs in two different tunings. I want him to have a second one so that we don't have to sit on stage while he tunes. So, I figure I'll buy a bass. Hey, maybe I'll end up learning how to play it, and I'm sure it will come in handy either way. But for now, I know nothing about bass guitars. So if anyone can recommend what kind of bass I should get I would really appreciate it. I want something quality, and I can afford to drop some money on it ($800-$150

Depends...

If you play rock, get a Gibson T-Bird. If you play a lot of different stuff, get a Peavey Cirrus or one of the Ibanez BTBs with the Bartolini electronics.

Also might look at a USA Schecter Model T. Bitchin' bass.

--edit--

I've always played a 4 & have been in rock, metal, and ska bands.

He plays a Westone. It was a gift from his ex-gf, so it's more sentimental then quality. But this bass would be for me. So I'm more worried about what will serve me best then him. Besides, I may have another bassist someday. The more equipment I have the more options I have to help my band. We are currently in a hard rock/rock band. Also, let me know if I should go 4 or 5 string bass. Thanks everyone.

you can get all the recommendations you want, but none of them matter if you don't like playing a particular bass. go to a music store and start picking basses off the wall, then you'll know what you want.

that being said, you should get a music man sterling. :p

That's how I pick guitars, but I don't want to be the idiot in the store who can't play bass trying bass guitars out! I know, I shouldn't give an F. What can I say, I'm vain.

Be the idiot who plays a few notes and really listens to them ring out. Then, play a scale or two for the feel of the neck. Then check the neck for dead spots and stuff. Then put the bass back with a pretty decent impression of it.

Music store bass wankery is totally not called for if you're actually looking for a bass instead of showing off.
