Members thehen Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 My favourite Precision players: Wilbur Bascombe -> The bass of Jeff Beck's infamous "Led Boots" and others. John Wetton -> His sound with King Crimson on "Red" is fantastic. I love it... not to mention his bass with Asia, UK etc.
Members Thumper Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 Favorite P-bass sound? Wow...where to begin... +1 for John Wetton on 'Red.' His tone kills.Paul Simonon on any Clash record.John Illsley on early Dire Straits.James Jamerson. Anything he did just sounded soooo good.
Members Detox Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 I have little choice in this matter, having grown up in Jamersontown during his heyday.

Members fretless Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 the P is clearly the right choice
Members der oxenrig Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 John Entwistle on Live at Leeds. P-bass through cranked Hiwatts. Nothin' better. Geezer Butler-'nuff said.

Members speddling Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 George Porter Jr (mad live tone! P + SVT4&810 + EBS pedals) Chris Wood (he's got THE P tone! but I imagine he could play a Rogue and sound like himself) Lucky Scott (pretty sure it's a P on "Curtis Live!"... killer bite to the tone) Tony Franklin (fretless P basses should always sound so good) Sting (early Police... not sure if it's used in the studio, but Gordon wore that maple board fretless P often back in the day) John Wetton (P + Hiwatt = THE distorted bass tone to have... IMO John smokes Entwistle's tone and lines. I've got 'Starless' playing now) Geezer nuff said

Members nicebigstrings Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 Jamerson for sure. Tommy Cogbill on Aretha's early Atlantic recordings. "Think" and "Since You've Been Gone" are prime. Who was getting as fat a tone as that guy in '67/'68? Duck Dunn, especially on later Booker T like "Melting Pot" and "Chicken Pox". Phil Chenn on Jeff Beck's "Blow by Blow" Glenn Matlock on "Never Mind the Bollocks'
Members narcolepticbass Posted October 8, 2005 Members Posted October 8, 2005 Geddy Lee on the first Rush album(some if not all of the songs were a P)

Members sunburstbasser Posted October 9, 2005 Members Posted October 9, 2005 Rocco Prestia used a P for years with the Tower. Jamerson and Babbitt. Gotta have both of them. Another vote for Wetton. I believe Greg Lake also used a P bass on In The Court Of The Crimson King. I believe it was a P in the liner notes, anyway.
