Members zachoff Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 I'm looking for recc's for higher energy rock covers that are fairly obscure but also fairly well-known that aren't classic rock... Any ideas?
Members sunburstbasser Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 THe Refreshments-The World Is Full Of Stupid People (Teen Angst) Anything off of RHCP's One Hot Minute is sorta obscure but still gonna be recognizable to some.
Members beam Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 I don't see how something can be "well-known" and "obscure" at the same time
Members Detox Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 "Over Under Sideways Down", "Too Much Monkey Business", and "Think About It". Check out the vers. of these on "Yardbirds Live at the BBC". Oops, it's actually called "Yardbirds BBC Sessions".

Two of the guys in my band are doing covers out that the other two of us don't really want to play (green day & jimmy eat world... basically radio rock type stuff). We kind of voiced our opinions last night & came up with a plan that we'd each come up with two or three that we'd like to do. Anyway, some of the bands I thought of were Cake and Blur. Just looking for more ideas.
Members 1039greenday Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 jerry was a racecar driver- primus?
Members bassplayer7770 Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 I'd say "Teen Angst" by Cracker, but that song usually killed the crowd whenever one of my previous bands played it... It was fun to play, though.

Members LanEvo Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 Just about any Andrew Weiss era Rollins Band. For example, "Low Self Opinion" and "Obscene" off of The End of Silence would be terrific songs to cover. Emre
Members degroove Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 How about some Pixies stuff or Breeders stuff? Here comes your man. Happiness is a Warm Gun Breeders style.
Members Melville Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 Originally posted by sunburstbasser THe Refreshments-The World Is Full Of Stupid People (Teen Angst) I think the song you're referring to is actually called Banditos. Great song, I'm a big Refreshments fan myself. In a similar vein you could do:Better Than Ezra's King of New Orleans or Desperately Wanting. Athenaeum's Unnoticed (people will most likely recognize it from Varsity Blues.) Fuel's ShimmerLocal H's Bound for the FloorMarvelous 3's Freak of the Week I may be listing stuff that's more pop than you're after though, just throwing out ideas.
Members zachoff Posted October 10, 2005 Author Members Posted October 10, 2005 My old band in college used to play Banditos. That's a fun song & the crowds we played dug it... Forgot about that one. I'm trying to think of some Pixies songs, but I'm thinking Los Angeles by Frank Black would be cooler. Hmmm. Dokken isn't really the direction we're looking but it would be fun to throw an older cheesy hair song.
Members The Insomniac Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 Here are a few that we have been playing. They're not new anymore but have a new feel. All Over You and / Selling The Drama - Live Right Now - SR-71 Shimmer - Fuel Adrienne - The Calling I guess the Live stuff might be considered Oldies now. Crap I'm getting old.
Members degroove Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 How about some Social Distortion!
Members zenfascist Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 Do some Bad Religion. Everybody loves Bad Religion.
Members fureybass Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 I guess it will depend on the place, but how could people not go nuts for a Pixies song? You don't know any girls that sing do you? I love covers of Gi-gee-antic Cake and Blur are good ideas. Song #3 is great and people always want to "Feel HEAVY ME-TAL.. Woo-hoo" Flaming Lips have some familiar songs The Killers have some good easy songs and someone can drag out that old synth, or try to do the synth parts on guitar. I would try a deeper track not "Mr Brightsides" or "Somebody told me." A lot of people have this record, and should know the songs. The bass part on Jenny was friend of mine is pretty cool. I'm assuming you're talking alterna-hits, here.
Members zachoff Posted October 10, 2005 Author Members Posted October 10, 2005 Hmm... We used to do Don't Drag Me Down & that went over pretty well. I suck at sounding even remotely like Graffin or Bad Religion would be fun. I don't know any girls that can sing, unfortunately... I'm still trying to think of a Pixies song we could pull off. Velouria might work. Jerry was a Racecar Driver?! Yeah, you've not heard me attempt to slap.
Members anothertxn Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 Hum - StarsSonic Youth - 100% or Sunday, although the tuning nightmares associated with such a thing might slow you down.Fugazi - Waiting Room I'm sure there is more...
Members cavy Posted October 10, 2005 Members Posted October 10, 2005 My band just went through a similar cover song crisis, a couple that we can up with that's good:Blind Melon -No Rain (everyone knows it, but forgot about it)Any Alice N' Chains!
