....

So the speakers are all set. I just need the cab.

Just because you have one or two 15's lying around does not mean that they will work (meaning sound good) in any old enclosure. Cabs are normally designed around the speaker(s) that will go in them.

Yeah, but whatever he does, they'll sound better than they would laying on the floor not hooked up. :)

(Idle hands being the devil's workshop and all...)

I do actually know that much :p

These speakers are the speakers i want to run my amp with. They are 14 watt 1958 jensen gold series Alnico V concert series P15R's.

They work great. I just need an enclosure. I realize that the enclosure makes a difference. But i dont think many people make an enclosure based on my specific needs. like the jensen speakers.

If this is for a guitar rig, the size/tuning of the enclosure is much less important. They would probably function just fine in an open back cabinet.

The only thing I can see this particular 2x15 guitar setup being good for is blues. The speakers you mention won't have the power handling to authentically do metal or heavy rock.

14 watt 15" Jensens? WTF?

Im going for a gritty rock type sound.

Not a smoothe distortion like metal or anything.

I think the speaker breakup with my 40 watt pignose would work well...

Im assuming this 14 watt rating is conservative, because i hooked them up to my Princeton Stereo Chorus last night (2x25 at 8 omhs) and they barely broke up with it on full blast.

I think theyll work great with my Pignose.

But I want to make sure that this i sa feasable application and im not just wasting precious speakers that are mu ch better in another area.

There is no other area. 14 watt speakers, regardless of size, are all but useless for bass, PA, or anything pushing a lot of air or low frequencies.

The only application those speakers are good for, IMHO, is guitar (classic rock/blues), or steel guitar.

That said, I'll bet they would sound great in the applications I listed... if time hasn't killed them. 50 years is quite a long life for speaker components. Open backed cab is my recommendation.

What is the point of making something like this?

Yo.

The point is that these will break up nicely. Which they do, and you dont have to drive them to incredible volumes to do so.

The smooth breakup and nice tight low end of these speakers is pretty evident by just hooking them up and leaning them against the back of my Princeton chorus. Not an ideal setup...

Maybe you havent ever come across anyone who ever used an amp that wasnt a 100 watt all tube half stack?

I guess I'm far from the norm of this board.

I like tone over volume. I dont gig, I jam occasionally, and when I do, I'd rather I sounded good as opposed to powerful and abrasive.

Is anyone with me on this? or am I all alone.

By the way, 15 inch speakers are great for guitar if you get good 15 inch speakers. I know a few people on this board who use the reissue P15N's for guitar and are overly pleased. It's all about preference, not necessarily having the same 1960A 412 that everyone has.

This isnt hostile in any way, I'm just answering your question sincerely. If youd like, ill make a recording of the 15's with the princeton chorus and you can see how great they sound.

If anyone is interested, lemme know.

I'm with you in terms of lower wattage amps, but you have to understand that this is a bass forum. When we think about 15" speakers, we're thinking about Tommy Shannon's thick, deep bass supporting Stevie Ray's searing guitar tone with big, juicy bottom.

We don't normally associate 15" speakers with SRV's guitar rig, which is what he used much of the time.

Also, I think in this day and age, with the latest generations of 10" and 12" speakers out there, old fossils like those Jensen 15s are giving way to smaller, tonally superior speakers, in smaller, more portable cabs. I mean honestly, what kind of guitarist wants to haul around a 2x15 cab into the venue with a dolly when he can mic a small 1x12 or 2x12 that'll do the same job @ less than 1/2 the size.

I can see breaking out a monster cab like that in the studio where tone is more critical, but when you're a working musician, tone sometimes has to take a backseat to portability and functionality.

I can totally understand where youre coming from. This should have been said earlier, but that is what this cab will be used for is for tonal contrast in my home studio. Im not planning on gigging with a 215, that would be awkward, and, well... stupid looking.

This is a project in order to increase my tonal capabilities as far as recording different styles of music in my studio.

Thank you very much for your reply though.
