Members i_wanna_les_paul
You mean strike, as in how hard you pluck? If so, then it's all a matter of preference and touch. Me, I have a very light touch usually when playing fingerstyle bass. Digging in will change your tone a bit, and maybe your playing style. For example, if you're playing metal, you're probably going to be hitting the strings a bit harder than if you're playing a coffee shop. Basically, do what works for the situation and you. Members KeroseneTrewthe
Sometimes I caress the strings like a beautiful lady. Other times I treat the strings like The Thing. Whatever the song calls for. As long as youre not clipping and distorting all over the place (not for effect) then whack those things. Im somewhere in the middle. Sometimes I get mad and start playing really hard. Man, this post sounds gay.

Members Gruven
Beat it if it needs to be beaten stroke it when it needs to be stroked (oooh, that makes me feel all funny inside). Seriously though: Do what the song calls for and mind your EQ. No-one wants to hear the strings rattling and squeaking.

Members Tlaloc
depends on what the song needs. sometime you need to do it soft and slow, others you need to strike it hard and really quickly, but it's good to be steady whatever way you use. and um... oh. Members Darkstorm
Better players dont. Cause lighter touch gives much greater control, and easier speed. But just as some drummers have no concept of finesse for their playing, so to, some bass players only understand hit as hard as possible. And thus they lack versatile expression, speed, and finesse. A fast sharp string strike isnt hard, its quick and snappy. Thus creating a strong thunder clap type responce not doable from just trying to play hard. Members sunburstbasser
I play as hard as I feel like playing. I learned a lot of my technique from Flea's style, so I have a fairly heavy hand naturally. I also back off though, because playing hard all night just HURTS. But its a lot of fun sometimes! Members DanTolen
I think this is an interesting thread, don't worry about it Derek;) . From personal experience: Striking soft = Warm jazz tone. Medium = Rock tone. Hard = A gainy, beefy, but sometimes farty tone. Do whatever you feel like Medium/soft is my preference. Members birdboy7007
Originally posted by DerekDRP let me guess your on your rag this month eh? :D :D The menstrual cycle averages about 28 days... approximately a month. So really, if Illidian was capable of being "on the rag" as you put it, he would actually be menstruating every month. So it is not possible to be "on the rag" for an entire month, as he would be menstruating for a period of each month.
