what strings work well on short scale basses(tight, minimal buzz, etc.)??

that's like asking what color in the rainbow is the best.

 

if you want bright, stainless steel.

a little mellower, nickel plated steel.

deep and mellow, flatwounds.

 

there are a few other kinds, but those are pretty standard.
