Members superpoo
I dig it. it's the first bass ive owned, but ive been playing guitar for 4 years, so i already know my way around the fretboard and stuff. i can play root notes and some simple bass lines. not sure what to do about an amp, though. a friend let me borrow a crate MXB15 or something like that, but thats not gonna cut it. i already have people asking me to play for their bands, so i need an amp loud enough for practices and stuff. i was thinking this cab http://stores.channeladvisor.com/musicsupplycenter/Items/200-04-0012?sck=10711457 since it's cheap. its made of plywood so it's got to be sturdy, and the reviews are good. if the speakers really suck ill replace them. dont know what to do about a head though. id like to keep it under 200. the behringer BX4500 would be perfect except it puts out 450w, and that cab is 400w RMS. the BX3000 wouldve been perfect but theyre discontinued. any ideas? Members hammer744
Someone here once mentioned this about bass cabinets... You can have it1) loud2) light3) sound good4) cheap Pick any three... Seriously, save up a little more and look into the Avatar cabinets - price is right and they come very highly rated. The B210 Delta cabinet is rated at 700watts. Then you could go with the Behringer head and have a decent rig for a good price. Members bassthumpintwin
for some reason i'm doubting (i could be wrong) that the Behringer amp really puts out a genuine 450RMS.... so I would suppose that a 400WRMS cab would match it just fine...... dont take my word for it though.... i'm just thinking out loud here. Members Crescent Seven
If you plug a stock SX into a Behringer head plugged into a Madison cabinet, you are going to experience a letdown the likes of which no man alive has experienced. Take that SX, buy an Ashdown MAG300, and the Avatar 2x10, and at least you'll have an rig that you can take pride in. MAG300=$300 Not sure how much the Avatar cab costs, but I've played that Madison cab (they're built in Loveland, CO, and I was not impressed. It farted. Then go get yourself some pickups for that bass, because my SX Jazz can't get out of it's own way. I love it to death, but brother, it ain't loud enough. Members sunburstbasser
Amp: Get a used GK if money is really tight. A 400RB-III or 800RB, used, can run under $200 on ebay fairly often. And GK amps are good for cutting through. You can plug a guitar amp into a bass cab at first, if needed, just don't expect wonderful tone. For a cab, get an Avatar, a Peavey, or check around for used stuff. The Avatar 2x12 is a great single cab for bass. And if you go the Avatar/Ashdown route, they cut you a deal on the head when you get the cab. BTW, a 450 watt head isn't actually going to put out 450 watts all the time. Thats more of an average. If you don't have to turn up much, it'll probably be fine. Behringer is also pretty lenient on most of their wattage ratings. I've heard the head they make now is exactly the same as the older version, just changed the numbers. Can't verify that though.
Members T. Alan Smith
Sweet bass man! It deserves a nice amp like the Ampeg B100R. If you've already got bands hunting you down, the B100R will work, and do it in style. It will pay for itself in no time.
Members superpoo
hey guys how are those ashdown electric blues? the price isnt bad [12" combo $319, 15" combo $350] but i wonder if 180w would be loud enough
Members sunburstbasser
I guess the Electric Blues carry their weight fairly well. If it isn't loud enough, it can go into the PA easily.
Members Tim in WV
Stock SX bass pups DO NOT SOUND BAD. I dont know who keeps the rumor up that SX basses need to have the pickups changed to sound good, but it's a lie. They need new pots and wiring, but the stock pups sound just fine. Now quit it. Members syciprider
Congrats on the bass. I love my SX. My only complaint is it needs a bit more output to drive some of my fuzz pedals. But I use mine for clean slapping and it's sweet in that role. Don't waste your money on the Chinese Ashdowns (Blue and Mag300). Everyone (3) I know who bought these things had problems with them. You may as well get a Behringer at least it's $100 cheaper. Go to a local GC and see what they have. I got an open stock SWR 350 for $340 there. Mine has worked fine and many forumites have been using them without a problem.

The stock pups sound great if you simply replace the stock pots & wiring. As far as I'm concerned, that's the only upgrade really necessary with the Essexes.
