White Sox Delay ThunderSludge

Unscrewed (sludgebass69) and Yard Fulla Cars (me) showed up last night to rock the house at Mike & Denise's in Aurora. As we were loading our gear in, we were asked by the staff to delay our setup until after the Sox game. This place has 5 LCD projectors with 5 huge screens that are setup in a corner. One is on the stage; the other two flank the stage on each side. At 8:15 pm, the game was in the 3rd inning.

So...we waited...and waited...and waited.

Unscrewed took the stage around 10:30 or 10:45p and played a great set! My band really, really liked their performance. They had lots of supporters in the crowd and the White Sox crowd was digging them too. The mix was good and Joel's bass was pumpin' the low end. The crowd had a good time and I could tell that they were having a blast as well.

From what I understand, Unscrewed has been offered follow-on bookings at Mike & Denise's. Way to go sludge!! They've been offered a date that YFC is looking to book somewhere...the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This is generally a great time to play because the college kids are home and out partying. I hope they are able to do it and rock the house.

From HCBF: Tony (vanlatte) and Karl (bassman1956) made it out. It's always a pleasure to see those guys. I still can't believe that Tony drove nearly an hour and a half from Wisconsin to check us out...twice now. It kinda made me wonder where T. Alan Smith, L-1329, beam, bpocall and others were.

;)

Bassman1956 was doing some sketches during the gig. I can't wait to see how they came out!!

We went on shortly after midnight. I think we played mostly a good set. We started strong and ended strong. Our rhythm guitarist started a song in the wrong key but recovered. Our lead blew an intro. I spaced out in the middle of a song or two (but am hoping it was barely noticeable). We pulled a guy from the audience, that our lead singer had invited to the gig, to do an impromptu version of "Sweet Home Alabama". That was kinda fun to do. We were asked for an encore, so we did "Shook Me All Night Long", and for some reason, I just could not get it right. I couldn't hear myself at all during this song, and know that I was off...no one said anything...but I knew. Our singers were as great as ever. It seems with our band, no one notices the "players" because our singers are hot and both have great, great voices.

On a freak-out note, my Boss TU-2 pedal bit the dust. I was having problems with it before the gig (didn't even think about bringing a backup). Before we went on, I was scrambling trying to get tuned. It was chaotic and I was freaking a little. Fortunately, Dave (the house soundguy) had a pedal tuner that he let me borrow. I really dug the tracking of it too (may pick one up at some point).

Oh...and the Sox won (8-2) and are a game away from the World Series.

Ah, they sucked...

Well, one of Tony and Dave in the corner by the pool tables is passible at best, as is the one of Joel and his singer and drummer. The rest were trash. Sorry.

I'd like to know...honestly...what you guys thought of the following:

- The sound of the P bass in the mix.

- The sound of the rhythm guitarist's acoustic guitar.

I thought both were pretty good. The P bass works fine in a country setting, and seemed to be in the right proportion and tone for the band. Didn't really notice the rythm acoustic, so I'd say it didn't sound wrong, although that might not be what you were looking for.

How was the overall mix?

We were disappointed last time we played there. We'd heard from some folks that they thought Dave (the sound guy) had the suck button on last time. Our stage mix was much, much better this time. I was able to hear myself most of the time and could hear the kick clearly most of the evening as well.

I thought it was pretty good. Last time, I thought the vocals were too low in volume, as well as too flat, no brilliance. Both seemed better this time.

I feel like I cheated on my G&L. I left her at home. I'm thinking that I'm done with the T-40FL live for the time being; it kicked my ass last night. I think switching the basses threw the soundguy because I kept hearing fluctuations in my volume. I saw him adjusting back there, but the uneven sound made it hard for me to play the song. I think I'll just take the G&L and the P bass...and a backup tuner from now on.

My little Korg GA-20 guitar/bass tuner always come thru. It does low B and flat tunings with ease. It stays in my pocket for every gig.

WooHoo!:D

Had a good time last night. I (and the rest of my band) really appreciate YFC letting us open for them. I felt bad, as they kinda got the raw end of the delay from the White Sox game. They didn't get started till a little after midnight.

As for the sound, I thought you guys sounded good, the mix definitely sounded better than the last time I saw you there. The P-bass sounded fine, hard to compare it to the G&L since I thought you were in the mix much better this time. As for the Rogue acoustic....uh....it sounded fine in the live mix. Your rhythm guitarist was probably the hardest to pick out in the mix to me though.

I could hear everything on stage when we were playing, but the guitar/treble was ear piercing up there.

It was cool as hell to see Vanlatte (and his guitarist) and bassman1956 there. Thanks for coming out guys. And Karl, I want tosee those sketches.;)

I definitely want to make it out for a show Jeff. I'd have loved to come out last night, but it was our last practice before a show we're playing next Saturday, and we got bumped to a later slot, so we had to learn 2 covers to fill time last night. I really want to make it out soon though. :)

You're going to seriously spam that gig here, right?

It's for charity. I probably should.

There's a very, very slim chance that I can make it. I'm working all day Saturday (a rarity for me) and have a marathon rehearsal on Sunday with the new YFC lead guitarist. It will be our only rehearsal prior to our Halloween gig.

Regardless, feel free to spam the board with your band's gigs (I know I do!). After vanlatte showing up at two of my gigs in less than two months and driving nearly 90 minutes each way to get there, I want to make a more concerted effort to get to forumites gigs.

Hey guys,

Was a good time despite the delay :D

Tbroom, the sound was just fine. It was much better than last time but even then it was not terrible, believe me I have heard much worse. And it really depended on where you were in the room; the closer tables were a little harsh but towards the back it was fine.

The P-bass was coming through nicely, it was not nearly as muddy sounding as last time so whatever you did, keep doing it!

Aurora is an interesting place, after the gig we were hungry so started the search for an all night diner or something. Driving up and down Farnsworth was not very promising, so we started taking side streets. We ended up on some stretch of road where for some reason all the store signs were in Spanish...even tho it was close to 3 AM there appeared to be some sort of fiesta going on, the place was packed. But being two gringos from out of town we felt a little...out of place so we got out of there ASAP. finally found a Dennys and while I usually hate that place I was so hungry I didnt care. :)

All in all it was a good time, glad we made it out and got to see you guys again as well as seeing Unscrewed for the first time.

So who is coming to Milwaukee on the 23rd to see us?

:p:D

Yeah, that's twice I've missed catching a forumite(s) gig. Was in New Jersy this time unfortunately. One of these times I'll be there!
