How to truly appreciate the gear you have...

It's ironic there was post earlier about speaker movement.

At last night's gig, the sound guy, also a bassplayer, and I were talking shop. I had mentioned wanting to get a 2x10 to add to my rig. He talked of this big $$ cab he had made by some Montreal speaker guru. He went home and got it for me to try out. I threw it on top of my 410 and plugged it in. Sounded pretty good. Quite a bit warmer sounding than my Hartke. Since it was a 4 ohm cab, I couldn't use it along with my Hartke, so I decided to use it alone and not plug in the 410. A few songs into the first set and this thing starts farting out like you wouldn't believe everytime I played an F# or E on the B string! He took the grill off at break and said some of the wires were bouncing off the cone. Put the grill back on, and same thing - uber-farting noises. He thinks the cones are contacting the grill.

Anyway, I unplugged it and went back to my Hartke for the remainder of the night, and had a much fuller, louder sound without all the farting out. A buddy of mine in the audience is also a bass player (Jazz bass into Ampeg gear) and said I had a great sound.

Sometimes it makes you wonder what all the GASsing for other gear is all about?

If you liek the way you sound, the band likes the way you sound, and even bassists in the audience like the way you sound...

You got no worries dude ;)

With the exception of the new tuner & Bassdriver, I've owned all this gear for several years and despite all the SWR badmouthing that goes on in the forums(and all the other sweet gear I've had the pleasure of trying), I have no plans of replacing any of it. I bought it to retire with. I plan on adding to it...but not replacing any of it. I bought it as a long-term investment. It will eventually pay for itself. Only after that will I even consider the thought of replacing it.

Very few of us just bought all this on a whim. Many of us work for months or even years at a time just for one new piece of gear.

Other than strings and the BDI pedal, I haven't purchased new gear in years. I'm saving gig money for another cab, but that will take awhile.

I told the guys last night that I keep looking at and researching new gear, but my Gallien and Hartke gear has never let me down and I've used that set-up since 1989. I'm not a teenager anymore though, and the weight of the 410 is starting to become a pain.

+1 to Sunburster.

I was 27 years old and married seven years and playing bass for about 13 years at that point before I could afford to buy my first real lefty bass - a 1982 4001 Ric which I soon sold to buy a 1983 MIA Fender Precision. (No regrets!) I have since purchased several more, but, I cannot just go into a store and plunk down a thou just because "I can." I study and research for weeks and months and I find guys who have what I want and ask a million questions before I purchase.

That being said, I am perfectly happy with the gear I have. I have no G.A.S. to satisfy. On the other hand, I have some good, quality gear, but it took me years and years to get there.

Amen. Everything you see in that pic was paid for fully in ca$h from gigging money. Every cent!

I think its ridiculous to judge gas for top notch gear on one episode with a friggin canuck speakermaker. I've gone from an Aria bass and Gorilla Amp to an Alembic bass and an Eden amp, passing thru SWR, Ampeg, Warwick along the way. No regrets or fartworthy gear stories. The name brand stuff lives up to the hype.

T. Alan, you've got a formidable set up there...I've had the Gol Jr. and I know what it's capable of.

Being an SWR freak also, it puzzles me as to why SWR takes a bashing here....everybody has a different sound they are hearing in their head, and we shouldn't eschew someone else's tastes in cabinets....

I'm sitting with my current equipment, inspecting for flaws or hot trouble spots before the next few gigs come up, and am very happy with my sound...the only modification I am going to make is to sell my gloss black Carvin LB75 and buy a MM Stingray 5'er. I've made that decision. So, Craigslist here I come!

Personally, I feel this summs it up quite well-

Me - I'm not a finesse player, I'm not a tasty licks kinda guy, I'm not a funky slapper, and I don't care about pristine note definition. I am lazy, I want it to move bowels, and I want every chic in the crowd to fantasize about my powerful woofers.

I am rock. I am Ampeg."

Well, let's not forget EA, GK, Walter Woods and others. SWR is hybrid actually, so let's not forget Eden and the like as well. :)

I'm just really turned on by SWR's Professional Series cabs, and their heads mate-up with their cabs very well.

I still want to get an all-tube head someday too. It won't replace my 350. Simply compliment it.

These are all just crayons in the ol' crayon box, after all.

I don't like SWR, but I think an SWR preamp with a tube poweramp section would be a killer combination. Actually, I imagine it would sound kind of like a Sunn, because Sunns used hi-fi Dynaco preamps & poweramps. My Sunn is relatively hi-fi compared to my old Bassman, & every ampeg i've used.

SWR MAKE A BLOODY VALVE AMP!!!

(and don't even THINK of putting the Fender name on it)

I'm happy with my pre/power amps, the Peavey Max is a kick-ass preamp, and the Carvin DCM1000 puts out a lot of clean power bridged at 4 ohms, and I've never had a problem with it....

If I started having problems with either, I've already decided to grab an SWR SM900 as my next head.....they are wonderful amps, also....
