As of this post it is up to 892 mb and will probably continue to rise.

Is that good or bad? Higher is better, right. Lower pressure means a stronger storm?

Yep.

Another problem with low pressure is that sea levels within the cyclonic system will rise, which obviously brings with it an increased risk of coastal flooding. IIRC there's a formula which says for every X decrease in mb, sea levels will rise by y metres but I can't remember, was ages ago I did this stuff

Am I the only one or is this just a bunch of rain and wind?

I went through one as a kid. It was fun then, but I wouldn't like it now. When hurricanes hit my aunt in Bal Harbor just gets together with "four old broads and a bottle of booze". They've all been down there 60 years and have lost their fear because of the "it ain't happenin' here" mentality.

It's making landfall in Cozumel.

Up to 930 mb.

The high pressure system that was holding it in check is now moving to the east and an area of low pressure is on its tail. This could be excellent news because the storm might just pass over the Yucatan and continue West as a weak storm into Mexico.

It could also be horrible news because rather than turning to the east, it might just turn north west and gain strengh before plowing into Texas.

The only good news is that the high pressure system over Florida will cause the storm to weaken significantly should it turn as the models are predicting.

Made landfall approx. 25iles south of Naples. That means much of the force and storm surge from the SE quadrant impacted the west coast of the Everglades which has little or no population living there. Most of the damage is appearing to be occurring on the east coast as Wilma moves east and the winds start beating on the Gold Coast.

Good thing was it waiting until I got my son married off Saturday night in an outdoor wedding. Last detail is to get the last of the family out of Tampa at 1:00 this afternoon. The Airline reports the flight has not been cancelled and I think it is going to work out OK.

We opened three shelters here in Manatee. I worked yesterday afternoon until 8:00 PM getting evacuees into the Red Cross shelters and I'll go back on duty at 2:00 this afternoon to see about getting everyone out of the shelters.

Just a report from the ground. I'm in Tampa, which was at the northern edge of this whole mess. Some wind and rain, but its a beautiful sunny day now, but rather blustery. Down south they got pounded a bit, but nothing like Katrina. The joys of America's Wang, or as they like to call it, the sunshine state!!

I started referring to it as "electile dysfunction" about 5 years back.
