Scored a good deal on a used MIM Fender Jazz Fretless ($150). Its in good shape, but I want to make it a project, cuz, well, i want to :) So Heres the options I know of:

1. Bad Ass- Pros- good name recognition, good resale, Cons- Expensive

2. Gotoh 201- Less expensive

3. Hipshot Vintage Bent (http://www.hipshotproducts.com/bassbridges.htm)

Anyone know of any others? I think I'm going with Barts for the pups, but I'm gonna keep it passive, maybe add the series/parallel option. Also adding shielding, of course, and all new pots. Jeez, this is getting expensive fast!!

There's no reason to go cheap after you've already gone with a low-ball Bass, make it Rock.

Bad-ASS II Bridge

Shaller Tuners

D'Marzio Pounder Split-P Pickup

I baught a nineties defretted Fender (none too special) Jazz Special that had stock Split-P/Jazz Bartolini's for about the same price. When I tried it out at home it sounded very week.

I added Schaller Tuners, Bad-Ass II Bass Bridge and installed a Barcus-Barry Hi-A Humbucker in the neck position with a Black Layered Pickguard Pickup mount shaped like a gothic Cross, added Rotosounds and it sounded as hot as my 74' Maple-Glo Rick.

Don't cut yourself short. These things really make a huge difference.:D

so the Bad Ass appears to be the winner. RE: Pup's, Yeah, i was thinking Ultra Jazz as an alternative. I want a warm, vintagey sound, full low end, slighlty attenuated highs. My ideal fretless sound is the guy off of paul simons graceland and rythym of the saints albums. Anyone know what he used?

Lindy Fralin would be a terrific choice. But they're about twice the price of the common Duncan/DiMarzio stuff. Worth it INMSHO.

Join the club! That's one of the best fretless sounds around.

I've been trying to figure this out forever (even made a couple of threads about it) but no one seems to know. Baghiti Khumalo used to endorse Washburn so many people assumed that he used a Wasburn on those albums. However, there are rumors that he actually used a Fender P-Bass that was lying around the studio for most of the album.

If anyone knows the real story, I'm all ears!
