Byebye horn, hello 5" mid-high...

I am hoping it is smoother. The crappy Motorola Piezo horn I had in there was fairly harsh. I like the sound I have now, but I am pushing the EQ too hard up top and the DI signal is suffering because of it.

Let you all know soon, tonight hopefully.

I can't take credit for it, because it was done some time ago in here. I inquired a few weeks ago about it, but received no answers so I am taking credit for it now :)

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense.

What 4x10 cab are you modding, Ben?

Must have quite a bit of room in the center to fit a 5" in there, eh?

Be interesting to see what you think of the new sound...you decided not to keep the same x-over, then? Dropping the x-over point a bit, I'd guess?

I will experiment with the crossover, for sure, as it is I am expecting a much nicer midrange.

The cab itself is based on a Trace Elliot pattern I believe. For a 4x10 it has a massive set of lows when I let it have it.

Not running it with the Peavey and rackmount compressor etc anymore, thankfully.

The horn was giving a harsh clipping sound. I suspect it was also affecting the travel of the 10s, if that is possible. At higher loads the crossover was failing.

I don't know what the 5" mid-high will do for mids. I am guessing the highs will be glassier and I will be able to dial in a nice amount of grind without it being horrible.

It is a large cabinet for a 4x10, I haven't really needed anything more. If I can find another amp that will take 2ohm load, then I will build another identical cab....

Unless I have four of these made up and run them in dual-parallel-series....

OK, it turned out.... pretty feckin' awesome!!

At first I wired it out of phase accidentally. The "Chengwah" speaker was devoid of polarity labels, result was a little thin and crispy midrange and highs. Second time was much better. The crossover could be a touch lower, but won't know until I crank it hard and see how it works.

The mids are much smoother and well defined now, with a good bite and grind. The highs are clear as a bell. I actually have just as much, if not more high-highs dialled in because it is glassier.

+1 why don't manufacturers do this instead? The cost difference was positive for my wallet

It doesn't appear as though anything has changed power wise, and from what I have read, it shouldn't.

I can't wait for practice tomorrow night to really crank it. I'll take some pictures then also and post those up. It looks really good.

Did you build some sort of box behind the 5" to keep it from acting like a little passive radiator? I picked up a couple of mids at Parts Express that might work good in that application and seeing as how I now need a real cab........
