How can I squeeze extra tone out of my amp?

So I have a Fender Rumble 100 with a 15 in. speaker and tweeter. I've had the thing for over a year. It's loud enough for the little "teen" shows I play at, but it's always sounded so generic. I've tried many different eq settings and different basses.

Is there any way to modify it, or something that I can buy that will get tone from generic sound?

Don't try to modify it, you'll only wind up spending money to be just marginally more happy. Go on a search throughout all the music stores you can and find the amp that has a tone you love. As soon as you can, buy the new amp and eBay the old. My $.02

I concur. You can spend some money replacing the speaker or putting a Sansamp in front of it, but you have to ask yourself if its really worth the money, and if the cash you spend on a sansamp or something wouldn't be better spent going towards a new amp.

Workingman's amps, from SWR, have been criticized for their lack of tone. Someone said you could spend $200 for the Sansamp, to go with a $500 or so dollar amp, and have a $400 sound.

YMMV.

Hehe...

I plug my CD player and iPod into my Ashdown/Avatar rig sometimes, when I wanna show my dorm neighbors the meaning of LOUD!:D

I concur. That way you get the most out of the mains.

Try Peavey, Yorkville, Eden Silver, Eden Nemesis, Genz Benz, & Ashdown. And some others. Replace your Fender with the one you like the best thats within your ability to save up for, budget.

There is one cheap soundupgrade you can try as well. Costs $10 or less. Go to your local "Michaels" or other craft store and get a pkg of polyester "High loft batting" the stuff used for making quilts cushiony And some duct tape and pair of scissors. Unroll the batting and fold it over a coue times so is 1-1& half inches thick. Blanket the entire rear and bottom of the cab (inside not outside, lol). Snug it up nto the corners and further secure it with a few peices of duct tape. Serves the same purpose as acoustic insuation in home speakers. Helps to tame midrange honk, sweetens the treble, & adds some bass articulation in most cases. Though it seldom applies to instrument rigs, it also ussually also improves stereo imaging/stage when done to home stereo speakers that have either no insulation or attic grade fiberglass like insulation (Yuck!).

What do you mean by generic? What don't you like about the sound? What bass(es) do you run through it?

Don't take this the wrong way but the thread title looks like one of those questions that is usually answered by people selling

I'm not trolling here, but what I meant by generic is just dead sounding. It sounds like the mids are scooped and there's just no life. I've tried different amps that sound full, but this one just makes "bass" noise instead of sounding like a true bass guitar.

How about one of those Ashdown Electric Blue combos with a 12 inch speaker?

I've heard lots of good reviews about that amp. Maybe you got a dud?

A Sansamp will work, though. It'll give you more tone, but will sound somewhat "generic," (depending on your defination of generic).

Like a true bass guitar? Perhaps then you want a cleaner more 'hifi' sounding amp such as a GK? I don't think there's any thing you can add to an amp to make it sound *less* coloured.

Ok, I'll give you guys an example of desired tone.

You know the bass part on Tool's Schism? The bass has mids, suistain and appealing sound.

Where as my amp no matter what I set it as sounds like a sub woofer with a tweeter.

I'm looking for an overal full, bright sound like in Tool's Schism, not a thumpy- clicky sound.

Another possibility I was thinking about is an EQ pedal. Would that have influence in the overall sound, or would it just color the sound more? Is there a such pedal that adds "gain" to the sound also?

I know tube amps will give me the tone I'm looking for, but also cost a {censored} load of cash.
