Members Kdogg
All right, I've got my SWR sm-500, and my SWR Goliath III 4x10 cabinet. I love the sound of the 4x10, tight, punchy, and really articulate. First gig was last night (Saturday), and it was rockin'! My only complaint was a lack of bottom end presence with the 4x10. So, I'm considering an additional cab to fill out the lower registers. The options I'm considering are as follows: SWR Son of Bertha 1x15 (they're on sale at GC right now for $399) My SWR Silverado combo amp (I already own it, and it's 350 watts into a 2x12 enclosure. I figured I'd just stack it on top of the 4x10.) Carvin 4x10 cabinet (a buddy's former bass player is selling it for $250, and it's like new. He doesn't like the sound, and on its own, it can't touch the Goliath, but stacked with the Goliath, it adds some nice push.) Just looking for some opinions and advice as to what you've found to be a good match with a lone 4x10 cabinet.
Members T. Alan Smith
IMNSFHO, Carvin's amplification divison is pretty lame. The SOB rocks my world. I have an SWR Professional Series rig as well with a GoliathJr.III cab, and tried it with the SOB and it was really REALLY nice. However, after working with just my 2x10 cab in the real world, and having the same wants as you, I'm wondering if the Big Ben isn't the way to go(???). Members jannda
A 212 will give some bottom and mid range but you probly don't lack mids with your tens and im not sure if 212s will give you the bottom you want i would go with a 115 or even a 118 and with a 118 you sertinly wont lack bottom i use a 115-118 set up but am considering going to a 212-118 setup
Members der oxenrig
If you want low end, then a Carvin 4x10 is the LAST place you wanna go.
Members Kdogg
Actually, the Carvin 4x10 didn't sound too bad. Along with the Goliath III 4x10, it maintained good punch with more bottom than just the Goliath alone. I wouldn't spend the money to buy a new Carvin, but for $250, it wouldn't hurt to have another 4x10. I haven't tried using the Goliath and my Silverado 2x12 combo together yet, but one of the advantages with this set up would be having the 2x12 powered by its own amp. Another plus, I already own it, and so wouldn't have to shell out anymore dough. I was always happy with the sound of the Silverado, it just can't move enough air. The advantage of getting the Son of Bertha 1x15 would be not having to lug around the Silverado (it's fairly heavy and bulky), and maybe a little more low end over the 2x12. 1x18... interesting:rolleyes:
