Several weeks ago I made the decision to stop selling Rockstar Energy Drink in our stores after learning that Rockstar's CEO, Russell Weiner, had founded the company with his parents Michael and Janet Weiner. (Check out the information on Rockstar's own website: http://www.rockstar69.com/new_html/company.html). Michael Weiner is better known as "Michael Savage", the host of an extreme radio program "Savage Nation".

The decision to take Rockstar off our shelves was not based on politics. We welcome customers from the entire political spectrum in our stores and are committed to being respectful of the various perspectives of all the staff at New Seasons Market. I chose to discontinue Rockstar because I do not want any part of the hate and prejudice that Michael Savage promotes.

Michael Savage regularly makes comments that target and degrade immigrants, women, homosexuals, people of the world's poor nations, Muslims, scholars, artists, our country's political leaders and the media. Here are a few excerpts:

1) He told a gay caller to "get AIDS and die". (He was fired from his job at MSNBC for this comment.)

2) "When I hear someone's in the civil rights business, I oil up my AR-15!".

3) He referred to Arabs as "non-humans" and "racist, fascist bigots".

4) He said "I commend prisoner abuse; we need more".

5) His suggested strategies for our countries actions in Iraq include, "I think a thousand of them held in the Iraqi prison should be given 24 hour -- a trial and executed, " and "They should put dynamite in their behinds and drop them from 35,000 feet, the whole pack of scum out of that jail."

6) He railed against the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and called the Red Cross "anti-American."

7) He characterized poet, educator and civil rights activist Maya Angelou as a "liar," "moron," "fraud," and "dirtbag."

New Seasons Market is proud to be an active member of our community. Michael Savage's hateful speech takes dead aim at the diversity, civic accord and true American values that make Portland a great city. I'm confident our customers see the difference between politics and hate and will support my decision to exclude Rockstar from our shelves.

I like that program. They are completly taking his comments out of context. If anyone really listens to what he has to say he makes a lot of sense. He's not a a right wing puppet like Limbaugh or Hannity either. He criticizes both sides.

The only energy drink that matters.

Unless you're drinking it with alcohol. I can find no alcohol that mixes well with it. I'm sure there's some magical combination, like with Red Bull and Jager, and if you find it, please let me know.

If you've got any 7-11's there, they usually sell the stuff. CompUSA is also a distributor. If all else fails, ThinkGeek.com and Xoxide.com both sell them; ThinkGeek only sells by the case (of 24), so it's kinda expensive to try, though. Xoxide sells two for $3.99 if I remember right.

They're the only energy drinks I've found that taste *good*, and they're stronger than all the other ones. It's not regular caffeine as found in coffee; it's an extract from the Guarana berry. Guarana caffeine is about 2.5 times stronger than regular caffeine, which puts this stuff at about the equivalent of 200mg per bottle.

Sounds to me like he just doesn't like weiners.

I think this is kind of neat. I like the idea of a company not putting profit at #1 all the time. New Seasons is a great chain in general, imho.

I don't think they did this for publicity, as the website is the only place I've read anything about this.

BTW, New Seasons beer and wine selection is so great that I don't mind if they lack in the energy drink department.
