Since I've been playing at Church...

I've taken a paying gig to play at a Presbyterian church 3 Sundays a month . Even though I have always considered myself an optomistic agnostic, I have never experienced anything that could be considered "faith."

I've been listening to the services and the basic message is "be excellent to each other."

So my question is...

Does someone find Jesus, or does Jesus jump up and say "Boo!?"

You have to invite Him in.

And if you've tried that already and no one walked through the door?

I kinda asked many times...and then I REALLY asked. Worked out eventually.

Yep. Big difference between saying you're doing it and actually doing it. And here's a hint, it has nothing to do with going to church.

My thoughts with no real religious terms to put anyones flatwounds in a knot:

I see it as He's like that old P-bass you have at home. You know that it is pure, faultless and will bring you ultimate peace and tonal nirvana in life, but you still decide to bring out the heavily modded SX to gigs. Why? because you think you can live your life on your own and for yourself. So the P-bass has always been there waiting, are you going to bring it along for the ride?

I don't understand this analogy at all.

plus a big ol' fat one. IMO, your life and the way you choose to live it, is what determines your outcome. you don't have to sit in church to live a good life, and just because you do sit in church doesn't mean you're safe...

but this is all just one man's opinion, and i could be wrong.

I'd recommend that you read through the Gospel of John.

In answer to your question:

John 6:44

"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him,"

The thing is EVERYONE gets AT LEAST one chance..... You dont have to "search" for Jesus.... Everyone comes under the conviction of the Holy Spirit at least one time or another in their lives, whether they will admit it or not.

You are given the choice to follow Jesus are reject him.....

many people think that all God requires is that you say a prayer and you're good.... the Bible says that many who called on His name will hear "i dont know you" on judgement day.

It's not about the prayer.... words are meaningless. It's gotta be about your heart and the work of the Spirit of God. You have to believe that Jesus is who he said he was in the Bible, that he came and died for you and rose three days later.

romans 10:9

"That if you confess with you mouth "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confessed and are saved."

Revelation 3:20

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.

Another vital part of "finding Jesus" is realizing that you are a sinner in NEED of salvation. You have to "get lost" before you can "get saved".

And one thing that you MUST have is FAITH.

"For it by grace you have been saved through faith, this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast"

Thats also key, WORKS dont save you, BUT if you are genuinely saved, and have seriously decided that you want to live for Jesus and trust him to save you from your sins and an eternity without him, your life will show works. James talks about this. "Faith without works in dead"

all in all, prayers wont save you, goin to church wont save you, and being mother teresa wont save you. It's faith in the Jesus Christ of the Bible that saves you. Everything else just comes along with that.

John 14:6 "I am the way the truth and the life, no man comes to the father but by ME" - Jesus

Read your Bible... Start with John, then read through the New Testament..... It's all in there.....

I didn't mean to imply that because I'm sitting in Church, I'm earning brownie points with the Big Guy. Taking the paying (that's why I took it in the first place. That and I was asked to participate by a friend at work) gig has put me in Church and has provided a catalyst for me to start thinking about this.

Yes, yes. I know all this. But I can't just go from 37 years of "hmmm, I wonder if God exists. I'd like to think so, but reason and logic suggest otherwise. Oh, and the Bible is sure full of nice parabols about being good to each other" to accepting Chist as Lord and Savior and taking the Bible as The Word of God.

Today, I think I would need a eureka moment, witness a miracle, a "Boo!"

The first thing to do is COMPLETELY ignore anyone on T.V. (or any other media for that matter ) who either is called a Christian or is labeled one.

Go right to the source...the bible.

Have you thought about talking to the pastor at said church?

Dan,

The Holy Spirit has a way of getting to you, doesn't it? You have to make a conscious, voluntary choice to follow Jesus. He will call but allows you to make the decision through your free will. I would suggest reading the following verses:

Romans 3:23

Romans 6:23

John 3:16

Romans 5:8

Ephesians 2:8 & 9

Romans 8:38 & 39

And then you might try reading the entire Gospel of John. It has a lot of insight as to where Jesus' heart is.

Jesus says there are only two rules to govern the lofe of a Christian:

1) Love the Lord your GOd with all of your heart, all of your mind and all of your soul, and

2) Love your neighbor as yourself.

I'll be praying for you. Send me a PM or E-mail if you have any questions I can help you with. The only unforgivable sin is to reject the saviour.
