Members Dark Slide Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 ... So this crossed my mind today and I thought I would put a post up about it. A friend of mine came up from Louisiana and was amazed that we have full service gas stations up here. I pull up, tell the guy how much gas I want, ask him to check my fluids, whatever... and they do it. That completely boggled him. He got a good bit of enjoyment out of doing it... and I do remember that while I was in Louisiana, there were no full service gas stations. So what about where you are? Do they have em, or do you have to do it all yourself? I'm just curious. Edit: Oh yeah, gas was down to $2.29 today. Whoo hoo!
Members spezzyos Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I'm in Massachusetts, and some towns aren't allowed to build self serve gas stations. We have full serve/self serve ones all over the place, where full serve is a few pennies more a gallon.
Members lug Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Not many left here. For a while, many years back, there were mainly split stations that had full service or self service. The full service actually cost more.
Members Zeromus-X Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 If I drive 20 miles to Va Beach, gas is down to $2.29. Looking down the street, it's $2.63 here. We've got one full serve place but the only one ever working there is a 900-year-old guy who has enough trouble pumping the gas, and takes forever at it, so it's not even worth it. I'll go there if it snows or something, which happens maybe once a year. They don't check stuff though.
Members bassplayer7770 Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Once in a while I notice a full service pump at a gas station, but they're not very popular around here anymore.
Members zachoff Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I've not seen a full service station since about 1987.
Members Zeromus-X Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 There are two states you aren't even legally allowed to pump your own gas -- I think it's New Mexico or Arizona, and New Jersey. I knew a girl who grew up in NJ who moved to go to college and really had never pumped her own gas, she was stumped. It soudns stupid but I guess if you've never ever had to do it, you'd never really learn. Who pays attention when other people do it?

One of them is Oregon where it's illegal to pump your own gas. There you get full service gas for less than we pay for self-serv in California.
Members megadan Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 They're dying out here... old people bitch when they do, everyone else is like "Full service???"
Members ARES Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 i can't even fathom paying some dude change my oil, let alone checking the fluid levels.
Members james on bass Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I worked at one in 1990. It is still around. Full serve around here is very rare.
Members mike fitzwell Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I haven't seen one around here in at least 10 years. Hell, now with most stations accepting debit & credit cards right at the pump I don't even go into the station anymore.
Members illidian Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Most are self-serve around here. btw, I got gas for $2.26.

And it's a different procedure so even if she watched she'd only know part of it. In full service stations all you have to do is punch the grade and start pumping. The fancy pumps would allow you to select a dollar or gallon amount and it would stop the pump at that point. One of my first jobs in high school was pumping gas at a Sunoco station. They had 5 grades and a weird pump to select them. If you wanted to screw a customer over you could start filling without clearing out the previous sale. Once I filled a Volkswagon and it came up as 53 gallons.....I'd filled a Suburban with two tanks just before......

You don't pay them. Unless you're tipping, of course. If it's negative degrees outside and snow and ice are falling from the sky, and my car is warm, I don't mind tipping two or three bucks for someone to do that for me -- it's worth the service.
Members cerrem Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I now live in San Diego where it is all self-serve... Went back to visit my folks in NJ and stepped out of my car to self-serve at the pump and the guy working there flipped out and went balistic... I basically had to tell the guy to calm the ### down or I would shove the gas nozzle down his ### throat.. See, I live in San Diego..but I haven't lost the BRONX touch when needed Many moons ago I pumped gas as a teenager.... Well, chics would do the wildest stuff.... This one nurse would come in just about once a week for gas and ask me to clean her windows....WHile I was cleaning the windows she would change out her underwear right there in the car cerrem
Members SA Rios Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 I remeber when I was a kid my mom would always go to full service. It was usually 10 cents more a gallon, but when gas was only .79 it was no big deal. The still have full service in Chicago area, but who would opt to pay an extra 10 or 20 cents when gas is so expensive anyway.
Members Emprov Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Full service here means you pay $.50/gal extra to have someone else pump your gas, nothing else. And BTW, cheap gas here is $2.77.

Members pbass_groovin Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Don't have any full service gas stations around here. I filled up yesterday for $2.11 a gallon
Members Emprov Posted October 28, 2005 Members Posted October 28, 2005 Originally posted by megadan $.50/gal? Around here it's $.03/l extra. Did you mean 5 cents? Nope, I meant $.50. Kinda helps put the whole $9bil Exxon quarterly profits in line, don't it!
Members Dark Slide Posted October 29, 2005 Author Members Posted October 29, 2005 Wow, I can't even believe that you guys pay more for Full Service than Self Service. I just found it interesting that people had never dealt with it. I never really pumped my own gas... when I went to Louisiana, I was out of my element. "You mean I have to pump my own gas AND I have to pay them BEFORE I do it?" But anyway, thanks for the responses. Sucks that you guys have to pay more for Full Service than for self... I've never tipped anyone at the gas station either.
Members 4string Posted October 29, 2005 Members Posted October 29, 2005 We still have them across Canada, but they are becoming rarer and rarer.
