Members mench
I've got a 212XLT in 8 ohm format, and I know you can get them in 4 ohms too. I imagine this is just in the way they're wired up - do you think it'd be possible to mod the cab so it can be switched between 8 and 4 ohms? It'd be nice to be able to run one cab sometimes at the amp's full rating...
Members oldivor
Nope, if the speakers are 4 ohm you can wired them for 8 and 2, and if the speakers are 8 ohm you can wired for 4 and 16.
Members beam
Yea, I'm thinking the only way is to put different speakers in there.

Members zenfascist
If you were to wire two 8 ohm speakers parallel, you would have a 4 ohm cabinet. If you were to wire them in series, you would have a 2 ohm cabinet. Simple as that. Parallel divides the impedance x2, series multiplies it (in the case of cabs with 2 speakers). Members mench
as I recall, to calculate parallel resistance, you use the formula 1/R = 1/r1 + 1/r2 so if r1 and r2 are both 8 ohm speakers, R would be 4 ohms (resistance of total cab) but if they're in 8 ohm speakers then wiring them in series would give you 16 ohms, and my cab is 8 ohms. So the speakers must be 4 ohms. Wiring mine in parallel would give you 2 ohms for the cab so my speakers are the wrong resistance for a 4 ohm cab. Unless the crossover or something else can have an effect on the resistance, but I'm assuming that's not the case. another lesson in thinking before you ask a question

Members burdizzos
If your cab is 8 ohms, it most likely has two 16 ohm speakers in parallel. There is no advantage to having a lower impedance cab, the difference in output is negligible with the same amp.
