Members DerekDRP Posted October 30, 2005 Members Posted October 30, 2005 Hey gang I am having a hard time trying to deside on my next amp. I have 2 choice's I have to deside on. The store manager said that this YorkVille will annoy the neighbor's Ok here is choice one. It's the YorkVille Amp of 50 watt's I cannot tell what model it is except for it's a 50 watt $285 Ok choice 2 Is the ashdown 150 EB. $349. I do want to support my store, But I also like the ashdown amp. Btw a little fyi. Money is very tight right now so I was talking to the store owner on my cort I'am paying for and asked if the $100 can be transfered to lesson's with out hurting the costumer and merchandiser relationship, He said sure no problem an gave the $100 back to me There for I paid my teacher for 2 month's worth. and had enough over for dinner. I hope you guy's will still continue to like me after our deal here.
Members bassment zombie Posted October 30, 2005 Members Posted October 30, 2005 Hey there Derek, I haven't played that Yorkie amp. I really like Yorkville gear, and I own an old BM400H head, which I think is a wonderful head, and will always own at least for my backup. That said, if you have the coin to spend, I'd recommend that Ashdown combo over the two. They sound great, and most importantly, you'll need that extra wattage when you play with bands. The 50 watt Yorkville will be more powerful than you need for a bedroom practice amp (you only need 15 or 20 for a bedroom practice amp - love my 80s Peavey Microbass for this), but the 50 watts won't be powerful enough to play with a band or dummer of any kind. Hope this helps?
Members james on bass Posted October 30, 2005 Members Posted October 30, 2005 I used a little Yorkie combo once. I believe it was 50 watts, and it was surprisingly powerful for a little package. Sounded good too.My young cousin uses it in a punk band. They haven't really played anywhere, just basement jamming, but she's never had an issue with not being heard.

Btw why would the store guy say that the 50 watt Yorkville annoy the neighbor's Sure thing, bro, I understood you just fine. Well, I think it can and will annoy the neighbors. But there's a difference between the power necessary to annoy the neighbors, and the power necessary to be heard properly with a live drummer and guitar(s). I can annoy my neighbors with my little Peavey Microbass, and I don't need to even turn it up much to do so. Then again, I live in the city, and our apartment is 1 floor of a 3 floor building. I'm not talking about annoying the neighbors across the street Though I certainly could have done so in the summer with the windows open The Yorkville might just have enough power to enable you to be heard with a band, however, you'd have to crank it to near full output, and you wouldn't get much of any dynamic response to your playing, as a result. Not to mention that it might not be particularly healthy for your gear to be forced to crank it most of the time you use it...the bottom line in bass gear is that you always want to err on the side of having a bit more power than you'll need (headroom) than having 'just enough' or too little. If you can afford the Ashdown EB, I'd highly recommend it. If you get the Yorkie, I think you'll be shopping around for another amp in the very near future, due to the power limitation. I think you should try as hard as you can to make the purchase 'right' the first time....my 2 cents...

Members Mudbass Posted October 30, 2005 Members Posted October 30, 2005 All things being equal I'd take the Yorky, but they aren't equal here. 50 watts just isn't enough to jam with and even a moderately loud drummer will drown you out.

On some night's my little ibanez 20 watt or 10 watter ( not sure wich wattage it is but it's very low can be heard down our hill behind the house. So bassically I will be using the yorkville or ashdown in a band with a drummer and 2 guitarist a church band thou. Thanks for the input guys.
Members DerekDRP Posted October 30, 2005 Author Members Posted October 30, 2005 Any other opion's folk's before I deside on what amp I want to buy?

Thanks for the input guys. You answered your own question right there... 50Watts will probably not be loud enough for playing with a drummer and two guitarists. And even if it did just cut it, you wouldn't have any extra power if you need it. I have a 200W Yorkie, and I love it. Plenty of power for my current uses, and I can squeeze some good sounds out of it too. But for that much price difference between the two, you may as well get the Ashdown for the extra oomph!

Thank you for the reply, But right now if I do get an amp it will be most likely the yorky 50 watter. and it will be a while before I get it. The 200 watt xml version you metion I can get for like $520 but that be 4 month's making payment's. Hmmm I hate choice's
Members Thunderbroom Posted October 30, 2005 Members Posted October 30, 2005 Derek...here's my two cents: Keep practicing. Period. Don't worry about gear at this point. Trust me. I've been down this road. When I started playing, I had more money than talent. I bought a bunch of stuff but still couldn't play. Focus on learning how to play. Save your money. Don't buy a new bass. Don't buy a new amp. Just save your money. When you think you're ready to start jamming with people, then...and only then...start thinking about new stuff. When you do, focus on the amp first. You're gonna need more than 50w to play in a band. 100w isn't twice as loud as 50w, but will provide you more headroom. I know it's exciting discussing gear and even buying it. I'd recommend 200w minimum with a DI for what ever amp setup you ultimately decide to use. I've got a bunch of gear in my basement but haven't gigged with anything more than my 210 and GB head for a while. It's been more than enough to play small bars, large bars and even outside gigs.

Very good 2 cents Tbroom, My little 10-20 watt Ibanez is great for now. you know I don't really need an amp right now be nice if I wanted to use it though. Btw Tbroom there is one gear I will be buying shortly and Cannot talk me out of it. it's a steini spirit 4 string Black.

I'm not going to try to talk you out of it; however, I still contend that you should save your money, keep practicing, and put that Steinie money towards a gig-worthy amp once you're ready to take that next step. I'm sure your P bass is fine...it just doesn't have a cool name on the headstock. Forget that crap...just play your bass!
