Members T. Alan Smith Posted November 4, 2005 Members Posted November 4, 2005 Gear produces sound. People produce tone. Sound is something we hear. Tone is something we feel emotionally. Tone is in the hands.

Also, there was a U2 related thread backing this up as well just the other day. ALSO...Those of us here that witnessed Bob's band, the Psychodots, play between 3 other perfectly decent bands, yet absolutly slay them in tone, can back this up as well.

Members Archon_113 Posted November 4, 2005 Members Posted November 4, 2005 I think it's about 50/50. Even the best bass players can't get a decent tone out of the worst bass amp ever made, and I certainly can't get a decent sound from my 30W Washburn practice amp, although I can from my Ashdown amp.

Tone is a comination of hands, instrument and amplification. Someone with good technique can get a better tone from lesser equipment. I'll back up T- Brooms idea that you sound like you regardless of what you play, but a crappy instrument needs to be coaxed more to get a good tone. A good instument with a bad player will often sound like a bad instrument.

Tone = the sound of your gear + the "heart & soul"(I prefer touch & expressiveness) of your playing. But, yeah, it comes from within you.

Derek, my grandfather once said to me: "The only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked."

Very kind of you to say, Thom. I think part of the reason you may have perceived it that way is due to experience...when you've been playing gigs for 30 plus years you tend to accumulate an understanding of what it takes to project a good sound into a room, or onto a recording. It's a gradual process of eliminating things that don't work well & incorporating things that do - & that relates to gear, playing technique, etc.
