Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 OK, so I need to get some new cables for both the bass and speakers. 1/4 for speaker and just regular bass instrument cables. What are some good ones that don't crap out? Any deals out there? ThanksDan
Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Author Members Posted November 6, 2005 Also, I will be playing alone most of the time. Should I get a drum machine? I was thinking it might be a cool thing to have..if so, whats a good one that is still affordable? Thanks!
Members illidian Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 Good home-made cables are best. After that, I will say that those with lifetime warranties. Most manufactures cables will crap out on you, so get some that you can replace when they break - but you also want ones that don't require you to get new ones all the time. Oh, and Tara Lab Cables are the best if you don't mind spending the money. They will increase your volume by over fifty percent and make your tone much better.
Members speddling Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 Only cables I use come from http://www.procablesnsound.com/ Todd and Patty are cool people and they make some real solid stuff. As far as a drum machine... I use random loops and midi patches on my computer.... but I don't need to take them with me. If you are looking to play out with a drum machine, then I'm not sure.
Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Author Members Posted November 6, 2005 As far as a drum machine, I was hoping for something to plug and play along to. I that Boss makes their Bass stuff, and it is a bit out of my price range right now, although a GT-6B would be nice.
Members pope_face Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 Err... maybe get a cheap computer music composer like E-Jay Dance 3 or whatnot... I found the Techno 2 version in Staples for $20 a couple years ago. It's really basic {censored}, just a bunch of loops that you drag and drop onto the screen. Mine has like 16 lines to place loops on, with individual volumes and left/right channels. It sucks because you can't fine tune as it only lets you place loops in certain "slots", like on a grid, so something like Acid Pro or whatnot would be better. But, get something like that, buy a cheap mp3 player (or a better one if you want to use it too... tax write-off for business... ) and a stack of CD-Rs and you're set to go. Burn like 32 million hours worth of riffs onto the cds then run them through an amp. Or... buy a laptop and do the same thing off your computer. You won't get the best quality, but you could do it for under $100. Philly
Members Gruven Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 Monster Bass Cables are the best sounding that I've used and they come with a no questions asked lifetime warranty.
Members bassplayinguy Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 i buy all my cables now from Butch at www.bayoucables.com very very nice cables, you can pick the ends you want and get any custom length... and the build quality is top notch. Ive had all my pedal board cables made by him aas well as two instument leads, my speakon cables, and all my bands mike cables too
Members MrJoshua Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 I tend to use Peavey cables. They're reasonably priced and last forever. Also, I wouldn't spend the money for Monster or something like that. The "science" behind some of thier claims is iffy at best.

Sounds like you need to A/B some cables, my friend.
Members Moody Johnny Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 My recent purchase is a DiMarzio cable (lifetime warranty). Expensive as hell, but the salesperson claimed that none have been returned, so I don't really know if I got ripped off. I don't know about the ends, but the cable itself is supposed to be indestructible. At least it's seems to be well shielded against noise.
Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Author Members Posted November 6, 2005 Originally posted by Gruven Sounds like you need to A/B some cables, my friend. I have a/b'd monster, planet waves, and spectraflex cables and I agree that monster cables are what your mind makes of them. All three cables sounded the same, and the spectraflex cables were much easier to work with. No coiling. I will not pay the price for monster cables, it's just too much. Don't get me started on the Tara Labs cables either. The couple of smaller cable makers that were suggested were kind of what I was looking for. Thanks guys! Dan:thu:

His prices are very reasonable and he seems to know what he's talking about..this is definitely a front runner.

Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Author Members Posted November 6, 2005 There is a difference with low quality cables and high quality. But once you get any high quality cable..they are pretty much the same. I could not hear a difference with the Tara Labs from the Planet waves..everyone hears what they hear though.
Members Gruven Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 I have a Planet Waves cable that I really like also. It has a shut off switch on it for switching instruments. Never tried the other brand. I guess what I'm trying to get at is the same as you. Spend the money on quality cables.
Members greenshag Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 here is my take...spend the money on quality cables where it matters...the studio....buy cheap disposable cables for live.
Members My bass in your face Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 There's only 1 kind of cable that will never ever crap out on you. That would be the cables you wind up with the proper method. Originally posted by bassplayinguy i buy all my cables now from Butch at www.bayoucables.com very very nice cables,.... I haven't wrecked a cable in 2 years. So I think it's time for some good {censored}. I'm getting those.

He knows his stuff with cabling and is a respected and trustworthy guy. If he was taking orders when I was looking for my custom serial speaker cable... I'd have used him. With pro cables and sound Patty is the engineer and builder, Todd does al the emailing and shipping. They are really nice folks, I actually offered to entertain them in my home when they were traveling to the east coast this past summer. They only made it as north as Delaware so we never hooked up. Monster Cables are pitching snake oil. Any professional grade cable and similar quality ends will sound better than the run of the mill generic. If I had time and materials, I would just build my own. Till then, Todd and Patty get my business Right now the cables are just about a year old... they are still almost new!

Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Author Members Posted November 6, 2005 If the testimonials say anything about him, it's that he makes great cables. And at a great price I might add. I am just hoping that it doesn't take too long to get them. Do you remember how long it took to receive your order?
Members bassplayinguy Posted November 6, 2005 Members Posted November 6, 2005 just under 2 weeks for my first order shipped to canada, ymy next order took 4 weeks but that was cuase customs stopped them and held it... he gets them out in like 3 days if they are small orders.. you should see them real quick
Members willsellout Posted November 6, 2005 Author Members Posted November 6, 2005 Cool, thanks. I'm probably not going to have a bass for another 2 weeks, so it works out good. Dan
