I am looking for a used Fender P Bass and ran across one the other day that was a late 80's model that was made in Japan. It played well and was in pretty good shape. The salesman claimed that these basses were very well made and rivaled the ones made in the US. They were asking $525 for it. Any thoughts on this bass would be greatly appreciated

MIJ P-basses from the early '80s are GREAT instruments. $525 seems a bit steep, though---I can't remember seeing any selling for over $400. See if you can't talk 'em down a bit.

Got my late '80s model (can't remember if it's an '87 or '89) in '90. It's been my main bass ever since. I sold off my American P-Bass because it just didn't compare in terms of comfort and sound. I'd say get it if you can.

I have an early 80's Fender p bass from Japan. It is very nice sounding and feels great. Only thing about it is that it is a 32" scale. Can't seem to adjust to it.

One of my cousins has an early 80's Squier P-Bass with reverse tuners and a maple neck. I've been trying for three years to get him to sell it to me. I can't believe how good it sounds.

The Jap Fender guitars and basses, of that time, were really great.

I have two MIJ Fender MB-5s, and I love them both. I think they were made in the 90s. I worked in a retail music store and sold Fender instruments in the mid seventies. The MIA Fenders back then were crap. The Japanese instruments were running circles around most of what American manufacturers were producing, both Fender and Gibson. The price you quoted sounds steep to me. I paid $250 and $99 for my MB-5s. eBaby purchases.
