Members Trento54 Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 I just had a idea!! Ok it is a thing that runs at 8 ohm but is not a speaker so when you plug it into a 4ohm amp with another cabnet the amp runs at full watage ! would it work ?
Members Gruven Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 You mean an 8 ohm resistor in parallel with your speaker? Hasn't that been done before?
Members Trento54 Posted November 18, 2005 Author Members Posted November 18, 2005 it would cost liek 10 bucks way cheaper then a nother cab
Members SoundwaveLove Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 its called a dummy load
Members Trento54 Posted November 18, 2005 Author Members Posted November 18, 2005 dammit i knew it was to good fot me to make up

Members fake-bass Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 hey sick one...thats an uber rad idea, even if you didnt originally think of it!
Members bassplayinguy Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 the problem with them is that they take a very high wattage resistor... which are expensive... and they create alot of heat... which is just wasted power
Members Trento54 Posted November 18, 2005 Author Members Posted November 18, 2005 oh dang!so do you think i should get 2 x 10 instead?
Members sunburstbasser Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 What your thinking of is something that changes the cabs impedance, not its resistance. So no, it wouldn't be a huge resistor. How many more watts are you gonna get at 4 ohms? I know my old GK got something like 40 more, about 1 dB in volume cranked. If you get ~200 watts more get a dummy load OR 2x10. Cause more speakers are always fun! But otherwise, you probably won't get much more out of it if you just had a dummy load. You might be better off getting a DI Box to run into the PA, instead of a new cab. Or lining out your amp.
Members Ace Of Bass Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 A dummy load is usually a coil of wire wrapped around a bar that dissapates heat--so yes, it works well to raise impedance. but, you're not going to be running at "full wattage" in any meaningful way. You're amp will put out twice the wattage, yes, but half of that will go to the 8-ohm cab, and half will go to the dummy load and get turned into heat. So, overall, you'll be working your amp twice as hard to put out the same amount of sound (actually, a little less, since you don't quite double wattage.) What you need is an output transformer, not a dummy load.Expect that to be extremely expensive.
Members JeffBass Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 My GK700 gets an additional 155 watts (225 to 380 on woofer amp) when I add my additional 2x10 cab to = 4 ohm load. For bigger gigs I bring the extra cab and it's LOUD.

You're adding drivers, too.doubling the # of drivers while keeping the power (wattage) the same increases volume much more than the extra 155 watts will.
Members JeffBass Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 That makes sense because I never push the thing past 4 (less than half) before the soundman starts complaining about my stage volume! Soundmen can be a real pain....
Members sunburstbasser Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 Yeah, drivers add more volume by far than watts. I think the ratio is something like 10x the wattage doubles the volume.
Members Jazz Ad Posted November 18, 2005 Members Posted November 18, 2005 This idea is an excellent way to lose power and eat more juice at the same time. Good idea if your rehearsal room is a bit cold though.
